Avengers 4 Continues With High Stakes

Warning: This article contains spoilers for Avengers: Infinity War.

Things aren't going to get any easier for the Avengers in Avengers 4.

Now that Avengers: Infinity War's finally made its high-flying premiere, fans are looking toward the second chapter in Marvel's two-part Avengers movie. Though directors Joe and Anthony Russo can't really give away anything concrete, the Infinity War filmmakers tell Variety that the stakes are going to be just as high in Avengers 4.

"Unless you have real stakes, you're sort of limited in terms of the emotional impact a story can have on you," Anthony explains. "You have to go to very difficult places for the stakes to feel real, for the characters to feel like they have something to lose, for the audience to feel like they have something at risk. What we're looking for in storytelling or art is emotional catharsis. And that's not simply getting what you want. It's getting an emotional experience that makes you feel and respond to it and energizes you on some level."

Fans who've already seen Infinity War know that Thanos succeeds in his quest collecting all the Infinity Stones. Now with half of the universe gone, all that's really left is for the remaining members of the Avengers and Guardians of the Galaxy is to reverse Thanos' massacre and bring back those that vanished. The Russo brothers say that it's definitely not going to be easy though, because even though "remarkable things can happen in a fantasy world," they all come at a cost.

The only question now is what is it going to take for the Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) and everyone left behind to undo what Thanos has done. Guess we'll have to wait to find out.

Avengers: Infinity War is currently screening in cinemas.
