Avatar: The Last Airbender Graphic Novels Getting New Creative Team

Dark Horse has announced a new creative team for the graphic novel series of Avatar: The Last Airbender. These comics have continued the adventures of Aang and his friends after the end of the Nickelodeon series, detailing his later years as the Avatar. Fans have enjoyed these comics so there might be a lot of pressure on the new team.

Entertainment Weekly revealed that writer Faith Erin Hicks will replace Gene Luen Yang as the writer, while Peter Wartman takes over artistic duties. Hicks revealed that she is a big fan of the Nickelodeon animated series and even said that inspired her when she was a struggling as an animator.

Wartman showed off some of his character designs, which look pitch perfect. It's clear that Aang and his friends have aged quite a bit, while still looking like their previous designs. The update should please many fans and it will be interesting to see how long Hicks and Wartman stay with the series.

Like Yang before them, Hicks and Wartman will be working very closely with Avatar: The Last Airbender co-creators Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko. It seems like their involvement has been crucial since the additional stories have often felt like direct followups to the original show. DiMartino is writing the Korra comics and the duo have teased a new Avatar series with twin protagonists.

Expect the new Avatar comic sometime in 2018. No release date has been revealed.
