Aquaman Is Going To Change DC Comic Book Fan’s Perspective Of Arthur Curry Forever

Before Jason Momoa was cast as the DC Extended Universe's Aquaman, Arthur Curry wasn't always seen as a kick-ass hero. He might be the King of Atlantis, but the character's been on the receiving end of a lot of jokes, both from his comrades in the Justice League and from fans following the comics.

Now, it looks like DC director James Wan is hoping that Momoa's performance in Aquaman redefines the character and commands respect from both fans and critics around the globe.

ComicBook.com got to speak with Wan and his team during a visit to the Aquaman set in Australia, and there the fan learned one of the biggest reasons why the filmmaker wanted to take on Stephen Curry's standalone movie.

"I think one of the things that really drew James [Wan] to Aquaman was the kind of underdog nature of him as a superhero," producer Peter Safran explained during his interview with the publication. "And, I know that after [Furious 7] when he was offered, basically, anything he wanted to do -- he told me, ‘I want to do Aquaman'. And, I had that same reaction that he seems to be one of those superheroes that people do make fun of. But, James loved the idea of turning people's perceptions of Aquaman on their head. And so, he's like, ‘Give me all the stuff that you made fun of and I'm gonna turn it on its ear and scare the s--- out of you with it.' And his feeling also was, it's Jason Momoa; once it's Jason Momoa you cannot make fun of this guy. He brings a whole new energy and power to Aquaman and just to the superhero world in general. And I think that that's one of the things that James embraced most firmly."

At first, fans were unsure about Warner Brother's decision to cast Game of Thrones star Jason Momoa as Aquaman, but ever since his quick debut in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice people began warming up to the actor's version of Arthur Curry. It's great seeing a different version of Aquaman being brought to the big screen, and there's certainly a lot of excitement building up over the superhero's standalone movie. Warner Brothers has been marketing the film as "Star Wars underwater," and as presumptuous as it might sound, fans have begun spotting similarities with the Star Wars prequel films after seeing a few first-look photos.

We definitely can't wait to see Aquaman when it swims to the big screen on December 21, 2018.
