Aquaman Director Debunks Three-Villain Rumor

The Aquaman solo film so far is the only DCEU movie slated to release in 2018, and a new rumor has come out that there will be a total of three villains the film: Black Manta (Abdul-Mateen), Ocean Master (Patrick Wilson), and King Nerues (Dolph Lundgren). Director James Wan has come out to debunk the rumor and makes some clarifications on characters.

Talking to Entertainment Weekly, Wan explains:

"This is what I'll say: I don't have three villains… I think that's ridiculous! I would never go into an origin movie with three villains. We don't even know the main character let alone the world and its antagonist. I believe in taking baby steps."

Having too many villains can be considered the downfall for a lot of comic book films. It happened to Sam Raimi's Spider-Man 3 and the same to Amazing Spider-Man 2. While Homecoming did have a lot of comic villains make an appearance, the main focus was mostly on Michael Keaton's Vulture.

As for who's who in the Aquaman movie, Wan goes on to say:

"I want to introduce Arthur Curry in a much more emotional and powerful way, and introduce Mera played by Amber Heard, and of course there's Nicole Kidman and Temuera Morrison playing his parents… We know Black Manta is in there, but I will say this: Patrick Wilson is the main antagonist in this film. I wouldn't necessarily say ‘villain,' but he's the antagonist."

With Justice League turning out to be a disappointment, the pressure is one once again for Aquaman to deliver the goods. Hopefully Wan will be able to bring something that more comic fans will like this time around. After all, it was already a chore to market the central character as a huge badass after years of scrutiny.

Aquaman hits theaters Dec. 21, 2018.
