How Alan Rickman’s Death Affected Galaxy Quest 2

The death of Alan Rickman had been one of the saddest moments in the history of the movie industry. Fans and celebrities alike mourned his passing, which has had a huge impact on their lives. Turns out, Rickman's death also played a big role on why a highly anticipated sci-fi film never came to fruition.

According to Sam Rockwell, who played Guy Fleegman in 1999's Galaxy Quest, the movie almost had a sequel. Sadly, the project, which could be in production at this time, was put on hold because Rickman passed away.

Rockwell made the revelation in a recent Nerdist podcast with Chris Hardwick:

They were going to do a sequel on Amazon.
We were ready to sign up, and [then] Alan Rickman passed away and Tim Allen wasn't available – he has a show – and everybody's schedule was all weird.
It was going to shoot, like, right now. And how do you fill that void of Alan Rickman? That's a hard void to fill.

Rickman's most popular role in this generation is playing Severus Snape in the Harry Potter franchise. Although the film series ended in 2011 with his character dying, Rickman's death also created a void in the hearts of Harry Potter fans.

One of the highly-acclaimed actor's most beloved roles was Alexander Dane on Galaxy Quest. It certainly would be hard to fill the void that Rickman left even to the sci-fi film.
