Alicia Vikander Talks The Tomb Raider Reboot And Taking Over For Angelina Jolie

Just like the game back in 2013, the Tomb Raider movie franchise is also getting a reboot and Ex Machina star Alicia Vikander will be taking on the role of a young Lara Croft. Talking to the Hollywood Reporter, Vikander talks about playing the games in her youth and filling in the shoes that once belonged to Angelina Jolie.

She explains:

"She's a very loved character like you said, and I grew up playing the games and I was thrilled when I was fifteen and I saw the films with Angelina Jolie. She really made her into an icon with those films."

With Jolie's version of Lara basically a fully-formed badass in her Tomb Raider movies, Vikander talks about the rebooted game where Lara is basically a regular, everyday girl who was forced to take up the become an action hero in order to survive an island full of murderous cult members. Vikander continues:

"The video game went through quite a change and it got rebooted in 2013. It's very much an origin story and it's kind of the next door girl taking on a journey of becoming the action hero that we very much know her to be. So, I definitely think there's a lot of elements there, both honoring the character that people know of and a lot of new elements that they will hopefully be surprised and engaged to see."

We still have no official synopsis for the Tomb Raider reboot, but the movie is said to borrow heavily from the 2013 Tomb Raider game. There's still no idea if the movie and the game will follow the same timeline or if the movie will be a loose adaptation.

Personally I hope it's something different. I don't need to see the entire Kimiko plotline condensed into a 2-hour movie.

Tomb Raider is set to come out March 16, 2018.
