Alfred Pennyworth Comedy Series In The Works?

DC TV has drawn in solid ratings in the past months. Among the successful DC series are Fox's Gotham; The CW's The Flash, Arrow, and Legends of Tomorrow; and CBS' Supergirl. Now, it seems that the DC brand is planning on taking another TV project.

This time though, it won't be about a well-known superhero, but rather a popular supporting character – Alfred Pennyworth. This unsurprising news, which may cause several fans to raise their eyebrows, comes as DC Entertainment was found to have registered a trademark (h/t io9) for the name Pennyworth.

According to io9, the trademark had been described as a "production of live-action, dramatic comedy television series." Currently, Alfred is portrayed by Jeremy Irons in the upcoming Batman v Superman:Dawn of Justice and Sean Pertwee on Fox's Gotham.

It remains unknown what the Pennyworth series' theme would be, if there will ever be one. Trademark filings are basically conducted for the purpose of prevent rights issues from happening to any idea that has a fair chance of happening. A series focusing on Alfred, the confidant of a disturbed vigilante might make for a good drama, but I have doubts on it working out as a comedy. However, it's still unknown whether the show will be including Batman at all.

Honestly, I'm still quite baffled and I don't see how the story for a Pennyworth TV series will go.

Gotham airs Monday nights. Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice will hit theaters on March 25.
