Everything We Know About Supreme Leader Snoke So Far

Ever since he first appeared in The Force Awakens, fans have been fully immersed in the mystique surrounding the enigmatic Supreme Leader Snoke. This is largely because we still know so little about him, and if there’s one thing that’s sure to drive Star Wars fans crazy, it’s ambiguity.

Nevertheless, Snoke isn’t a complete mystery, so in anticipation of The Last Jedi, here’s everything we know about Supreme Leader Snoke so far:

  1. He’s Probably Not Human

Given his outward appearance, you’d be forgiven for assuming that Snoke is simply a severely disfigured human. However, it’s believed that he’s actually a humanoid alien of unknown origins. This hasn’t been expressly confirmed or denied by Lucasfilm, but given his abnormal height (“he’s 7-foot-something tall” – Neal Scanlan, chief of creature and droid effects) and the implication that he’s an ancient being, one can assume he might not be an ordinary, Force-sensitive human. Speaking of which…

  2. He’s A Powerful Force-User

We don’t yet know the full extent of Snoke’s powers. According to StarWars.com, though, he’s described as being “powerful with the dark side of the Force,” and we got a taste of his telepathy in The Force Awakens when he revealed that he knew BB-8 and the map to Luke were aboard the Millennium Falcon. Furthermore, we saw Snoke use his Force abilities to seemingly torture Rey in the first full trailer for The Last Jedi, so it can be assumed that he’s not afraid to go on the offensive if needed.

  3. Kylo Ren Isn’t His First Apprentice

We learned very little about the Knights of Ren in The Force Awakens, but we do know that Snoke based the group’s practices off of the ancient Sith teachings from Malachor. That being the case, Snoke followed in the footsteps of the Sith by appointing an apprentice, although Kylo Ren wasn’t his first. According to the canonical books that have come out since the release of TFA, Snoke has had multiple apprentices since becoming Supreme Leader. Kylo Ren is the only one we know by name, but perhaps that could change before the current trilogy comes to a close.

  4. He Chose Ben Solo As His Apprentice Due To His Balance Between The Light And Dark Sides Of The Force

Contrary to what we witnessed with Anakin and Palpatine, Snoke’s reason for seducing Ben Solo to the dark side wasn’t because he embodied that aspect of the Force. In fact, as the grandson of Darth Vader and the nephew of Luke, Snoke saw Ben as having the perfect balance between the light and the dark sides. He took an early interest in Ben, and being Force-sensitive, herself, Leia was well aware of this. Unfortunately, she was unable to shield her son from Snoke’s influence.

  5. He Believes Darth Vader’s Compassion Caused The Fall Of The Galactic Empire

Snoke witnessed both the rise and the fall of the Galactic Empire, and after its demise, he developed a strong disdain for Luke. The reason for this is because Snoke believed it was Darth Vader’s compassion and love for his son that led to the Empire’s downfall. He’s not entirely wrong, either, and despite passing this belief onto Kylo Ren, the latter still holds a special place in his cold, black heart for his deceased grandfather.
