Breaking Down the Latest Trailer for Solo: A Star Wars Story

The newest trailer for Solo: A Star Wars Story arrived last night, and despite there being just a little more than a month until the film hits theaters, fans were treated to plenty of new footage, as well as some clues as to what – aside from the obvious – we can expect from the latest Star Wars spinoff. We’ve got plenty of ground to cover, so follow along with us as we jump in and break down the latest trailer for Solo: A Star Wars Story:

  1. More Enfys Nest

It doesn’t take long before we’re given an up-close and personal look at one of Solo’s primary antagonists, Enfys Nest. While we still don’t know a whole lot about her motives, we do know that she’s a pirate who leads a gang known as the Cloud-Riders and that for one reason or another, she has a bone to pick with Han.

  2. The Climactic Sabacc Game?

Even passing Star Wars fans are likely familiar with the fact that Han won his cherished Millennium Falcon from Lando Calrissian in a game of sabacc. Here, we get a look at what very well could be the start of that climactic game (or at the very least, a precursor to the real deal). It’s also worth noting this scene will likely serve as the cantina sequence of Solo, which has become something of a prerequisite in recent Star Wars films.

  3. ‘Rough Around the Edges’

We still don’t know too much about Emilia Clarke’s Qi’ra. However, it’s clear she outpaces Luke, Leia, Lando, and even Chewie as Han’s oldest companion. In this scene, the pair appears to be reuniting after one of the time jumps we’re expecting to see in the film, with Qi’ra telling Han that he looks good, despite being “a little rough around the edges.”

  4. Big Shot Gangster

While attempting to recruit Han, we see Woody Harrelson’s Tobias Beckett, who tells the scoundrel that there’s a job offer from a “big shot gangster.” We then get our first look at Paul Bettany as Dryden Vos, who will presumably be the other main antagonist of Solo. The scars all over his face certainly raise a number of questions, though whether any of them are answered in the film remains to be seen.

  5. Han’s Trusty Blaster

From the moment we first met Han Solo in A New Hope, we learned how much trust he places in his blaster. However, it appears the weapon was actually a gift from Beckett, as we see Han’s mentor kiss the weapon goodbye before tossing it to his new protégé.

  6. ‘Yeah, I Know a Guy’

While fans are aware that Han won the Millennium Falcon from Lando, it seems as though that wasn’t how they were first introduced to one another. Instead, the two smugglers appear to have a mutual friend in Qi’ra, who recommends Beckett and his crew recruit Lando when they find themselves in need of a ship. However, while Han looks to still be establishing himself as the character we see in the original trilogy, Lando apparently already has an impressive reputation in the galaxy.

  7. ‘…You’re in This Life for Good’

Beckett certainly doesn’t sugarcoat things for Han. “If you come with us, you’re in this life for good,” he tells him, symbolizing the moment Han makes the transition from a small-time scam artist to a full-fledged scoundrel.

  8. The Conveyex Battle

One of the biggest action set pieces in Solo will be the heist on the Conveyex. Here, we get another look at that sequence, including the epic firefight atop the speeding vessel. We also get a great shot of the Range troopers – a new variation of the traditional Imperial Stormtroopers who wear heavy-duty armor with fur for cold-weather combat.

  9. Foreshadowing Lando’s Betrayal?

“Let me give you some advice,” Beckett says to Han. “Assume everyone will betray you, and you will never be disappointed.” As Beckett says these words, we cut to a shot of Lando, which is most certainly just a clever bit of editing done specifically for the trailer. Nevertheless, for longtime Star Wars fans, it calls to mind how Lando eventually does betray Han by turning him over to the Empire in Episode V.

  10. Malla?

Perhaps the only thing good – or at least not terrible – to come from the 1978 Star Wars Holiday Special was the introduction of Chewbacca’s wife, Malla, whom he parted ways with after swearing a life debt to Han for saving him. It’s unclear if the Wookiee Chewie’s hugging in this shot is Malla, but since we’re going to see how he and Han first meet in Solo, it certainly stands within reason to presume it’s her.

  11. ‘I’ve Got a Really Good Feeling About This’

“I’ve got a bad feeling about this” – it’s a line we’ve heard in every Star Wars film to date. However, the Han we see here appears to have a much more optimistic outlook, as he says the exact opposite while sporting a large, child-like grin. It just goes to show you what years of being a scoundrel can do to your attitude.

  12. ‘You Look Great!’

We all know Chewbacca is old. After all, he doesn’t appear to have aged one bit from the prequels to the sequels. Just to put an official timestamp on things, though, we learn here that during the events of Solo, Chewie’s at the spry young age of 190.

  13. Dryden Vos’ Unique New Weapon

In this shot, we once again see Dryden Vos, but this time, he’s armed with a unique new weapon. The easiest thing to equate it to is a pair of brass knuckles with red lasers emerging from either side, but if nothing else, it appears to rival the lightsaber in terms of slicing power.

  14. Chewie the Murderer?

We’ve seen Chewie get violent in past films. However, we’ve never seen anything quite like this. Grabbing a soldier by the torso, the raging Wookiee proceeds to launch him into the air and slam him head first into the ground, likely (if not definitely) breaking his neck and killing him.

Solo: A Star Wars Story hits theaters May 25.
