Breaking Down the Final Avengers: Infinity War Trailer

Fans have been eagerly awaiting the final trailer for Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Infinity War and that patience has finally been rewarded!

Packed with almost exclusively new footage, the trailer gives us our best look yet at the threats that await Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, as well as our first look at interactions between characters we’ve been waiting years to see on the big screen. It’s definitely a lot to unpack, so let’s not waste any more time. Follow along with as we break down the final Avengers: Infinity War trailer:

  1. ‘He Can Do It With the Snap of His Fingers’

The trailer begins with an incredibly comic-book-accurate description of Thanos’ motivation for seeking out the Infinity Stones and assembling the Infinity Gauntlet – to eliminate half of all life in the universe with the snap of his fingers. This, of course, comes from Gamora, who has perhaps the closest ties to Thanos out of any of the other heroes, so Tony has every reason to take her warning seriously.

  2. Secret Identity, No More?

Judging by what we see here, one has to wonder whether Peter’s secret identity will remain a secret in Infinity War. After all, in the first trailer, we see him in a school bus but here, he’s clinging to the outside before throwing on his mask and swinging away. Surely his classmates would notice, so perhaps the threat of Thanos outweighs Peter’s desire to keep his Spider-Man alter ego under wraps.

  3. Some Serious Upgrades

While in pursuit of the Q-Ship that’s been featured heavily in previous footage, we get a nice look at one of the latest upgrades to Tony’s Iron Man armor. These rocket boosters will likely be instrumental in Tony being able to travel through space, where we know he’ll eventually encounter the Guardians of the Galaxy.

  4. Exposing the Time Stone

We learned in Doctor Strange that the Eye of Agamotto that hangs from the neck of the Sorcerer Supreme houses the Time Stone, so we have to assume Strange is planning to use it in this shot. Either that or he’s going to remove the stone so it can be placed somewhere else for safekeeping.

  5. Welcome to Wakanda

We’ve seen plenty of shots of Captain America and company in Wakanda, but here, we get to see his initial arrival. It’s nice to see him, Black Widow, Bruce Banner, Rhodey, Falcon, and Vision seemingly being met with open arms, despite what transpired in Captain America: Civil War.

  6. The Meeting We’ve All Been Waiting for

Anyone who says they haven’t been dying to see Chris Pratt’s Peter Quill/Star-Lord and Robert Downey Jr.’s Tony Stark/Iron Man finally come face-to-face is an absolute liar. In this scene, Peter sassily offers to come up with an alternative to Tony’s plan to lure Thanos to them with the Infinity Stones. Meanwhile, Peter (Parker, that is) is all smiles, apparently thankful to finally be on a real Avengers mission.

  7. Forging a New Weapon?

We know that after having Mjolnir destroyed by Hela in Thor: Ragnarok, the God of Thunder is poised to receive a new weapon in the form of Stormbreaker. Could he be forging the battle-ax in this scene, while Rocket Raccoon and Groot look on?

  8. The Helmet!

Something about Thanos without his helmet isn’t quite right. Thankfully, we get to see him sporting the iconic headwear in a few shots.

  9. A Gamora Origin Story (Gamorigin Story?)

While it’s highly unlikely we’ll get a full-fledged Gamora origin story, it does appear that we’ll at least get a flashback sequence teasing her early days under the care of the Mad Titan. Of course, this is likely when Thanos first kidnapped Gamora from her homeworld, and as we know, things only go downhill from there. It will be interesting to see how much more of the pair’s backstory is explored in the film.

  10. Whose Side is Loki On?

The implication in the first trailer was that Loki might be working with Thanos, but this shot seems to contradict that notion. Here, we see Thanos’ Black Order (aka the Children of Thanos) – Proxima Midnight, Ebony Maw, Corvus Glaive, and Cull Obsidian – fully assembled for the first time, and judging by Proxima Midnight’s spear, Loki appears to be their prisoner. We also see a shot of Thanos seemingly forcing Thor to watch something, so could it be his brother’s execution?

  11. Strange-Lord

Another team-up that promises to introduce an interesting new dynamic to the MCU is the one we see here, between Star-Lord and Doctor Strange. As the former dodges blasts, the latter uses magic to shoot out flaming discs to act as stepping-stones, propelling Star-Lord towards the pair’s shared enemy so he can introduce them to his quad-blaster.

  12. Straight From the Comics

This scene, in which Ebony Maw has the Sorcerer Supreme in a precarious position, may look familiar to comic book fans. That’s because it’s practically lifted straight from the pages of Jonathan Hickman and Mike Deodato’s New Avengers #9. Published in 2013, this issue served as a tie-in to the Infinity event, which is where the Black Order was first introduced.

  13. Cap v Thanos

In the first trailer, we saw Thanos deliver a massive blow to Iron Man, but here, the Mad Titan discovers that Captain America won’t go down quite as easily. When Cap catches Thanos’ gauntleted fist, the look on his face seems to indicate that he’s confused, annoyed, or perhaps even impressed. Heck, maybe it’s all three!

Avengers: Infinity War assembles in theaters April 27.
