5 Scenes From the Avengers: Infinity War Trailers That Didn’t Appear in the Film

WARNING: The following article contains major spoilers for Avengers: Infinity War, now in theaters nationwide.

These days, it’s hardly uncommon for movie trailers to contain footage that’s ultimately left on the cutting room floor, and Marvel Studios’ latest superhero blockbuster, Avengers: Infinity War, is no exception. However, while it’s hardly as big of an offender on this front as Justice League, there are still a handful of memorable shots in the lead-up to the film’s release that were conspicuous by their absence.

With that in mind, here are five scenes from the Avengers: Infinity War trailers that didn’t appear in the film:

  1. Thor Meeting the Guardians

The highly anticipated scene in which the God of Thunder first comes face-to-face with the Guardians of the Galaxy plays out almost exactly the same in the film as it does in the trailers… almost. The key difference is that in the trailers, after Thor says, “Who the hell are you guys?” the camera then cuts to a shot of the Guardians looking back at him in a friendly and welcoming manner (Mantis even waves to Thor). In the film, though, we see that the ragtag band of space vigilantes is far more standoffish, with Star-Lord pointing his Quad Blaster at the space-bound Avenger.

  2. Bruce Banner With the Hulkbuster Arm

Marvel certainly didn’t shy away from hinting that it would be Bruce, rather than Tony, who was inside the Hulkbuster armor in Infinity War. In fact, in the trailers, there was a shot of Bruce standing right next to one of the Hulkbuster arms during his apparent reunion with Natasha. In the film, though, their reunion actually takes place at the Avengers compound, and the shot in question is completely absent. It’s probably for the best, though, as it was far more impactful to see the Hulkbuster armor show up with Bruce already inside it.

  3. Forging Stormbreaker

Much like Bruce donning the Hulkbuster armor, the trailers made it no secret that Thor would end up with a new weapon to replace Mjolnir in Infinity War. However, while we do see Stormbreaker’s creation in the film, what we don’t see is the God of Thunder grabbing his new weapon and raising it to the sky to summon a barrage of lightning bolts. Instead, this act is saved for the Battle of Wakanda, which – while still impressive – doesn’t feel quite as cinematic as the shot from the trailer.

  4. ‘But This… Does Put a Smile on My Face’

“Fun isn’t something one considers when balancing the universe… But this… does put a smile on my face.” We hear the Mad Titan Thanos speak these bone-chilling words in the trailers for Infinity War, and while it’s arguably the most memorable line from the film’s marketing campaign, it – along with the scene that accompanies it – is missing from the final product. Based on how Thanos is portrayed, though, it actually makes sense that the line was cut. After all, the Mad Titan is far more reserved, and he considers the act of balancing the universe to be a heavy burden that he must bear, so this line would essentially go against his character arc.

  5. Cap’s Secret Avengers

If you were to ask someone, “Hey, do you remember that shot from the Infinity War trailer?” chances are they’ll know exactly which one you’re talking about. Nearly every trailer and TV spot featured the shot of Cap, Bucky, Black Widow, Hulk, Okoye, Black Panther, War Machine, and Falcon charging towards the camera with the entire Wakandan army behind them. However, despite rivaling the “camera panning around the entire team” shot from The Avengers in terms of geek-out moments, this scene doesn’t appear at any point in the film. Neither does Hulk, for that matter, save for his brief skirmish with Thanos in the opening scene.
