5 Biggest Questions We Have After Watching The Game Of Thrones Season Finale

Wow, what an episode! Game of Thrones has certainly had both hits and misses when it comes to closing out a season, but the Season 7 finale, “The Dragon and the Wolf,” managed to brilliantly cap off what’s been one of the most impactful, high-stakes chapters in the entire series.

Like each of the previous six finales, though, the events of “The Dragon and the Wolf” raised a number of questions, not only concerning the fate of our favorite characters but of Westeros itself now that the White Walkers and the Army of the Dead have nothing to stop them from marching south. Naturally, this article will contain spoilers, so if you haven’t seen the Season 7 finale yet, this is where we sadly must part ways.

Here are the 5 biggest questions we have after watching the Game of Thrones season finale:

  1. Did Tormund and Beric Survive The Collapse Of The Wall?

As we begin to approach the end of the episode, we meet up with Tormund Gianstbane, Beric Dondarrion, and various others as they review the defenses from the top of the Wall. Soon, though, we see a White Walker emerge from the forest, with his brethren and the entire Army of the Dead close behind him. And as if this wasn’t bad enough, the moment that was foreshadowed in “Beyond the Wall” finally comes to fruition as we see the Night King enter the fray, perched ominously on the back of the undead Viserion, whose deadly blue flames turn the frozen fortress into mere ice cubes.

While the destruction of the Wall certainly raises a number of questions in its own right, one can’t help but wonder whether or not Tormund and Beric were able to escape with their lives. The last time we see them, they’re scurrying down the various platforms of the Wall, and considering we don’t actually see them die, it’s a pretty safe bet that they’ll show up in the Season 8 premiere. Still, let’s keep them in our prayers all the same.

  2. Is This The End Of Jaime And Cersei?

Ever since he learned that his lover/sister unleashed wildfire on innocent people back in Season 6, Jaime’s relationship with Cersei has shown some visible signs of strain. And while many predicted that he would ultimately betray her this season, we instead see him decide to leave King’s Landing in disgust upon learning that Cersei has no intention of keeping her promise to help Jon and Daenerys fight the White Walkers.

Does this mean that the twincest between Jaime and Cersei is now a thing of the past? Well, we’ve seen the pair have their fair share of conflicts before, but this time around, the fate of the living truly hangs in the balance. On the other hand, though, Cersei’s pregnancy could lead Jaime to return, if only for the sake of his unborn child, but that’s assuming the pregnancy is legitimate and not just Cersei using it as an excuse to manipulate both of her brothers.

    Speaking of her other brother…

  3. What Exactly Is Going On With Tyrion?

When we see Jon enter Daenerys’ cabin while sailing north, we get a shot of Tyrion looking on from just down the corridor, unbeknownst to the love struck pair. It’s clear from the look on Tyrion’s face that he disapproves of his Queen’s decision to knock boots with Jon, and not just because he’s her nephew (he isn’t aware of this yet). So why, then, does Tyrion look so despondent?

The most likely reason is that Tyrion, thinking as the Queen’s advisor, simply believes that Daenerys is making a political mistake by shacking up with the man who only just bent the knee to her in the previous episode. Still, we can’t rule out the possibility that Tyrion’s reaction is fueled by his own desire to become Daenerys’ successor, given her insistence that she’s unable to bear children, or perhaps that he has fallen in love with her, himself. And while those options seem a bit out of character, what if Tyrion is starting to feel conflicted about his allegiance following his emotional reunion with his older sister? Could there be a betrayal in the works? Is that how Tyrion was able to sway Cersei after she firmly refused to align with Jon and Daenerys? Let’s hope not.

  4. Will Jon And Daenerys’ Relationship Continue Once They Learn The Truth?

We all saw it coming from a mile away. Still, Daenerys and Jon (AKA unsuspecting aunt and nephew) getting it on will probably remain one of the most divisive Game of Thrones moments for years to come. That begs the question, though, of whether or not Jon and Daenerys’ feelings towards one another will change when they finally learn that Jon is actually Aegon Targaryen, the son of Rhaegar Targaryen and Lyanna Stark.

First, we have to remember the fact that Targaryens regularly practiced incest to keep their royal bloodline pure. And let’s be honest, Jon and Daenerys’s relationship, for whatever reason, is far more palatable than Jaime and Cersei’s. However, you can’t help but imagine that two level-headed, intelligent individuals like Jon and Daenerys would ultimately be against keeping it all in the family. And even if their love outweighs that hurdle, there’s still one potentially major roadblock that could cause the pair to split…

  5. Will Jon And Daenerys Compete For The Iron Throne?

For as long as we’ve known Jon Snow, he’s never been afraid to admit that he doesn’t want to rule. That being said, for someone with no interest in ruling, having Lord Commander of the Night’s Watch and King in the North on his resume certainly paints a perplexing picture. In Jon’s defense, he never sought out these positions, though, and only accepted them because he felt it was his obligation, but when he finds out that he is the rightful heir to the Iron Throne, will he see that as an obligation, as well?

Meanwhile, you have Daenerys, who’s spent her entire life fighting to reclaim what she believes is rightfully hers. Surely Bran revealing that he had a vision wouldn’t be enough to convince her that her life’s work has all been for nothing. That being said, are we going to see a brand-new power struggle in the ever-crowded quest for the Iron Throne? Only time will tell.
