5 Anime Movies & Shows Coming to Netflix in 2019

2018 was a huge year for anime on Netflix. Between Devilman Crybaby, The Seven Deadly Sins: Revival of the Commandments, Sirius the Jaeger and two Godzilla films, there was no shortage of content to stream.

Thankfully, it appears we’re in for more of the same this year. With that in mind, here are five anime movies and shows coming to Netflix in 2019:

  1. Godzilla: Planet Eater (Jan. 9)

Part three of Toho Animation and Polygon Pictures’ CGI animated Godzilla films already premiered theatrically in Japan. However, it will soon be available to stream in the US, bringing the kaiju trilogy to a climactic close. Not only will Planet Eater see Haruo and his crew return to Earth but the film will also see the emergence of King Ghidorah, the fan-favorite Godzilla baddie. If that alone doesn’t convince you to add Godzilla: Planet Eater to your queue, nothing will.

  2. ULTRAMAN (April 1)

Ultraman was first made famous in Japan in the mid-1960s as the star of his own television series. Now, thanks to Netflix, the character has the opportunity to return to the limelight. The series will take place years after the titular hero disappeared, but his son Shinjiro will discover he’s inherited his father’s abilities, which he must use to battle an emerging alien threat. It truly is ULTRAMAN for a whole new generation.

  3. Cannon Busters (April 1)

Based on the LeSean Thomas comic book series of the same name, Cannon Busters is the story of a friendship droid names S.A.M., that’s accompanied by a maintenance robot and a young fugitive on its search for its best friend, the prince of Gearbolt. However, with the kingdom under siege, so the stakes of this journey are incredibly high. Interestingly enough, the anime adaptation began as a Kickstarter campaign launched by Thomas in 2014, so Netflix’s Cannon Busters is a project that’s already five years in the making.

  4. 7 Seeds (April)

Yumi Tamura’s manga series 7 Seeds, which debuted in 2001, concluded in May 2017. However, this year it receives the anime treatment, though the number of episodes and planned seasons remains unknown. The series follows Natsu, who awakens in a post-apocalyptic world to discover she’d been placed in cryostasis in an effort to preserve humanity. Now, she and the other survivors must face their harsh new reality.

  5. Neon Genesis Evangelion (Spring)

Arguably the biggest addition to Netflix’s arsenal of anime in 2019 is Neon Genesis Evangelion, which is receiving 26 episodes and two feature-length movies. The fan-favorite franchise launched in with a manga series by Yoshiyuki Sadamoto. Since then, it’s been adapted for film, television, video games, books and more. In fact, many credit Neon Genesis Evangelion for breathing new life into the anime industry in the mid-1990s. It’s still unknown when the series and films will arrive on Netflix, but when they do, you’d better make sure you’re schedule’s cleared.
