14 Details in The New Star Wars: The Last Jedi Trailer You Probably Missed

The new Star Wars: The Last Jedi trailer was finally released, and it has done its job of emotionally winding up fans to drive them to box office sites like Fandango. Now that the trailer is out, let's break down the details that you probably missed.

  1. Luke is Scared of Rey's Power

Ever since the first Star Wars: The Last Jedi teaser came out, we know that Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) wants the Jedi to end, and the new trailer might reveal why. Remember how Luke couldn't pull his X-Wing out of the bog in Dagobah and Yoda had to do it for him? Based on what we've seen so far, it looks like Rey (Daisy Ridley) doesn't have any of those "I can't" hang-ups. Rey already proved that she has skills with the Force and lightsaber but when she splits the rock they're standing on, he looks afraid at her massive amount of power. “I’ve seen this raw strength only once before," he says. "It didn’t scare me enough then. It does now.”

It looks like Luke decides to stop her training because he remembers what happened to his former apprentice, Kylo Ren (a.k.a. Ben Solo), and sees his similarity with Rey.

  2. Kylo Ren's Old Shuttle

We already know that Kylo Ren will have a new TIE Fighter model in Star Wars: The Last Jedi but what about his old shuttle?

Since Kylo Ren's shuttle appeared in The Force Awakens and that he's confirmed to get a new TIE Fighter in The Last Jedi, some fans believe that the old shuttle won't appear in the sequel. However, the new trailer and the new poster revealed Kylo Ren's shuttle.

We still don't know if the shuttle will play a huge role in the film or if Kylo Ren is even in that ship. Top officers like General Hux might be aboard that ship.

  3. Leia is in Charge of The Resistance's Fleet

The late Carrie Fisher doesn't appear much in this trailer but it shows that her role has been upped significantly. She appears to be in charge of the Resistance and its entire fleet. However, she looks troubled, so does that mean that Kylo Ren will end up killing his mother?

  4. Darth Vader Parallels

It's clear that Kylo Ren wants to live up to his grandfather's legacy, Although Darth Vader turned back to the Light Side and sacrificed himself to end the evil reign of the Emperor, Ren refers to that as a "momentary lapse of judgement." In The Force Awakens, Ren made it clear that he wants to fulfill Vader's mission to destroy the Resistance and “finish what [he] started.” Those wishes are portrayed on the new trailer's imagery.

Recurring motifs include the scene that shows Kylo Ren and a squad of First Order troopers invading the Resistance base on Crait. This mirrors the Revenge of the Sith scene in which Darth Vader and the Clone Troopers invade the Jedi Temple on Coruscant after Order 66 was executed.

  5. Mining in Crait

There's a shot of the Millennium Falcon dive weaving through the caverns as it was being pursued by the First Order TIE Fighters. Red stalagmite can be seen protruding around the caverns, and it looks like there are some mining equipments surrounding the area. This new location is called Crait, and based on what the Rogue One: A Star Wars Story visual guide mentioned, there's a historical significance to the location. However, we still don't know what's being mined in the caverns. Could it be a Kyber crystals for lightsabers? Gems to help fund the war?

  6. Finn is Wearing a First Order Uniform

The trailer shows Finn (John Boyega) in action as he fights Captain Phasma (Gwendoline Christie) but he's clearly wearing the First Order uniform. Don't worry. He didn't return to the First Order's side. It looks like he's under cover this time, but why? I'm pretty sure Finn will play an important role in the film, and he's said to be accompanied by Rose (Kelly Marie Tran) However, Rose is nowhere to be seen in the trailer. My guess is that this scene will happen near the end of the film.

  7. Poe Reminds Us That There's Still A Resistance Story Line

While most are talking about the fate of the Skywalker family, Poe's moment in the trailer reminds us to look at the bigger picture. Poe is yelling about taking out the First Order, and something tragic probably happened to make him react this way. Did Kylo Ren pull the trigger and shoot the Resistance's fleet?

  8. Chewie Has A New Porg Friend

There's a new adorable creature in Star Wars: The Last Jedi and it kind of reminds me of Beanie Babies/Pokemon. The trailer gives us a glimpse of a Porg in the Millennium Falcon beside Chewie. They may look cute but there's a disturbing truth behind these creatures

  9. Porgs Are Not The Only New Creatures in The Last Jedi

Some fans call it "Ice Fox" or "Snow Wolf" but "Crystal Fox" might be more fitting since Crait is not a snow/ice planet like Hoth.

  10. Supreme Leader Snoke in The Flesh

In The Force Awakens, Supreme Leader Snoke (Andy Serkis) only appears as a hologram but the new Last Jedi trailer gives us our first look at the First Order villain in the flesh, but it's still unclear whether he's speaking to Kylo Ren or Rey about "fulfilling your destiny."

  11. Snoke vs. Rey

The trailer shows Rey with her back bent backwards while she's screaming in agony, and this scene seems to take place in Snoke's throne room. If you look more closely, you'll see Snoke in the background with his golden robes. How could she possibly survive this confrontation?

  12. Why Does Rey Leave Ahch-To?

From the trailer, we know that Rey will eventually leave Ahch-To and go to Kylo Ren but why would she leave Ahch-To? Even if Luke refuses to continue teaching her, it's unlikely that she would leave the only known Jedi Master who isn't bad. Maybe she was forced to leave. in the new trailer, there's a shot of Rey diving into water and surfaces to see Luke standing in front of her. It looks like Rey was exploring the Jedi Temple, and Luke doesn't look happy. "This is not going to go the way you think," he says while lying down. It looks like Luke was knocked down probably after confronting Rey, and this probably caused her to leave Ahch-To.

  13. Whose Hand Emerges From The FIre?

There's a shot of a building in flames, and suddenly we see a hand emerge from the fire, and it looks like that hand is Luke's. It's followed by a shot of R2-D2 looking at the same environment from a distance. How did that place burn down? If that was actually Luke, then whoever caused that destrution must have been powerful enough to take him down.

  14. Is Rey Turning to The Dark Side?

The latest Star Wars: The Last Jedi trailer was so cleverly-edited that it made it seem like disparate shots all come together. At the final seconds of the trailer, we see Rey telling someone that she needs help finding her place in the galaxy, and trailer closes with Kylo Ren extending his hand. This may lead some to think that Rey is turning to the Dark Side but if you look closely, Rey's surroundings doesn't have many effects while Kylo Ren's background shows ash and fire floating around.

Kylo Ren and Rey will probably share a scene in the film but these two shots from the trailer don't add up. You can read more analysis about that here

Star Wars: The Last Jedi will be released in theaters on December 15, 2017.
