12 Magic: The Gathering Modern Staples You Should Buy Before They Get More Expensive

Ultimate Masters is the last Modern Masters set in the "foreseeable future" according to Wizards of the Coast. Without new MM sets, Modern staples are likely not going to be reprinted as frequently as they have been. As one of the most popular formats in MTG, prices on Modern staples have continued to rise as more people jump into this eternal format. The best part about Modern is that once you buy-in, you are set for life (unless of course your deck gets banned). If you are looking to get into modern, or want to get staples, you better do it soon! It's probably not going to get cheaper anytime in the "foreseeable future".Here are 12 Magic: The Gathering Modern Staples You Should Buy Before They Go up in Value:

  1. Ancestral Vision

Last year, Ancestral Vision was valued at $40 before it was reprinted in Iconic Masters. Ancestral is such a powerful card. Nothing can really match its raw draw potential at one blue mana in Modern. At around $10, I don't see Ancestral Vision going down anytime soon.

  2. Voice of Resurgence

Voice is another $40 card that has slowly declined in value over the past few years. It's only been printed twice, and at mythic rarity each time. The price has been pretty stable at about $10 for the past year. If control decks get popular again, decks that utilize Voice of Resurgence may become more popular. It's hard to see a staple mythic such as Voice go for much less than $10.

  3. Spellskite

Spellskite is a versatile sideboard card. It was famous as a way to deal with Splinter-Twin, which some have been rallying to be unbanned in Modern. The argument for a Splinter-Twin unban is that Twin decks make interactive decks like Jund better, and hence improve the format and make it fairer. Right now Midrange interactive decks like Jund have been playing pretty poorly in the meta. Spellskite also answers a variety of decks such as Bogles and Infect. At $8 a piece, Spellskite is lower than it has ever been. It wouldn't be a bad idea to pick them up while they are cheap. You never know what deck it might answer in the future.

  4. Pact of Negation

Before the M25 reprint, Pact of Negation was selling for as much as $40. It's a steal now at just under $10. A zero mana counter in Modern is pretty unique and should maintain usefulness for years to come.

  5. Collected Company

Unless this gets reprinted, I can see Collected Company being a $40 card in 1 to 2 years. It's already doubled in price since Kaladesh was released. Pick it up now if you are thinking of running a creature based Modern deck in the future.

  6. Walking Ballista

Ballista is currently in a trough. Why, I don't know. It sees play in a wide range of Modern decks. It's only been around for a few years, but it is already making an impact in Modern decklists such as Tron and Hardened Scales. Ballista is going to stick around for a while, so you might as well pick up a few copies.

  7. Spell Queller

Spell Queller is seeing significant play in Modern, particular in Bant Spirits right now. As a 3 mana counter that can also win the game, Spell Queller can make a huge difference for the decks that run it. Arguably, it's the reason Spirit decks have been placing better than Humans recently. Queller has stayed pretty steady in price over the past year but probably won't stay that way forever.

  8. Karn Liberated

Tron isn't going anywhere in Modern anytime soon. Now that Karn has been reprinted, it's gone down in price a bit. This makes it the perfect time to pick it up at a discount. It's unlikely to be reprinted anytime soon, and will only go up in value over the years.

  9. Damnation

Thanks to MM 2017, Damnation dropped from $70 to just under $20. It's been increasing steadily since then, and already up 50% to $30. It took WOTC years to reprint Damnation for the first time, even after saying they intended to do so. This is one card you may regret waiting on.

  10. Scapeshift

Since it got reprinted in Core 2019, Scapeshift has gotten a lot cheaper. It's at about $7 a piece now. Core 2019 packs are going to be getting cracked less and less over the next year until it is out of stock entirely. When that happens, expect Scapeshift to start rising in value.

  11. Glimmervoid

I've had my eye on Glimmervoid for a while. It's essential to quite a few artifact-based decks. One reason Glimmervoid is cheap is because Affinity has lost popularity to Hardened Scales. It's gone down from $20 to $10 in the past year. If there's a shift back toward Affinity or another Glimmervoid based deck, this card could spike in value. In 2015, Glimmervoid went from $10 to about $50. It could happen again. There's never been a better time to get a playset of Glimmervoids for Modern.

  12. Grove of the Burnwillows

A few years ago, Grove of the Burnwillows was a $100 card. Thanks to Iconic Masters it has fallen to about $12. It sees play in every format it's legal in. I've always found a good mana base to be a great investment. Grove seems priced pretty well now, but it won't stay that way forever.
