10 Surprising MCU Cameos in Avengers: Endgame

WARNING: The following article contains major spoilers for Avengers: Endgame, now in theaters.

Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Endgame certainly didn’t skimp on surprises. From Captain America wielding Mjolnir to Professor Hulk to Iron Man’s sacrifice, few could have predicted what was in store following Infinity War’s heartbreaking cliffhanger ending.

However, in addition to the plot-specific bombshells, there was also a handful of shocking cameos from faces we never thought we’d see in the Marvel Cinematic Universe again. So, with that in mind, here are 10 surprising MCU cameos in Avengers: Endgame:

  1. The Ancient One

Appearing previously in Doctor Strange, no one was expecting Tilda Swinton’s Ancient One to return to the MCU, especially considering the controversy surrounding her casting in the role. Nevertheless, when Captain America, Iron Man, Hulk and Ant-Man travel back to 2012, Hulk runs into the Ancient One when attempting to retrieve the Eye of Agamotto, aka the Time Stone.

  2. Jane Foster

Natalie Portman hasn’t shied away from her displeasure with playing Jane Foster in the first two Thor films. Naturally, her returning to the MCU seemed unlikely, but when photos of her from the world premiere of Endgame surfaced online, fans were intrigued. Of course, the few shots of Portman in Endgame are likely archival footage from Thor: The Dark World, but still, seeing Rocket Raccoon extract the Aether from Jane Foster was a welcome surprise.

  3. Crossbones

When Frank Grillo’s Crossbones was unceremoniously killed off in Captain America: Civil War, fans thought they’d seen the last of Brock Rumlow. However, when S.H.I.E.L.D./HYDRA arrives at Stark Tower in 2012 to apprehend Loki and the Mind Stone, Rumlow is one of the agents on the scene. He isn’t alone, though…

  4. Jasper Sitwell

Agent Jasper Sitwell, who was a prominent figure in Captain America: Winter Soldier, is also at Stark Tower to collect the goods for HYDRA. Thankfully, though, the present-day Cap is aware of S.H.I.E.L.D.’s true colors and with a simple “Hail HYDRA,” he’s able to make off with the Mind Stone.

  5. Alexander Pierce

Robert Redford is an A-list actor and many fans were surprised to see him in a superhero movie with Winter Soldier came out. They were probably equally surprised to see him reprise his role as Alexander Pierce in Endgame, even if it is just a few lines of dialogue as the Avengers argue with S.H.I.E.L.D. over Loki and the Tesseract.

  6. Korg & Miek

Korg and Miek were two of the fan-favorite characters coming out of Thor: Ragnarok. However, when we learned in Infinity War that half of the Asgardians and Sakaarans were killed, many feared they were among the fallen. As we find out in Endgame, though, Korg and Miek both survived and have since shacked up with Thor in New Asgard, where they spend their time playing Fortnite and eating junk food.

  7. Howard Stark

One of the two actors to play Tony Stark’s father Howard, John Slattery, makes a surprise appearance when Tony and Steve travel back to the 1970s to steal the Tesseract from S.H.I.E.L.D. after Loki gets away with the 2012 incarnation. Not only is a surprise but it’s also a touching moment that allows Tony to reconcile his complicated feelings toward his father shortly before he makes the ultimate sacrifice.

  8. Peggy Carter

With the cancelation of ABC’s Agent Carter, fans thought they’d seen the last of Hayley Atwell in the MCU. However, in the ‘70s, Steve catches a glimpse of his long-lost love at the S.H.I.E.L.D. facility, and later in the film, he returns to the 1940s to finally give her that dance he owed her.

  9. Jarvis

Speaking of Agent Carter, the show is notable for bringing the inspiration for Tony’s AI J.A.R.V.I.S. to life in the form of James D’Arcy’s Edwin Jarvis, the butler of Howard Stark. In Endgame, when Tony bids farewell to his father, we see Jarvis in the flesh once more, which is perhaps the only time in MCU history a film has tipped its hat to a Marvel TV series, at least on this grand a scale.

  10. Harley Keener

During Tony’s funeral, the camera pans from group to group of MCU mainstays with a connection to the deceased Iron Avenger. One shot, though, is of a lone teenager, and if he looked familiar to you, it’s because it was Ty Simpkins, who played Harley Keener in Iron Man 3. Harley, of course, was the young boy whose garage Tony commandeered and later upgraded when he was on the run.
