10 Questions We Have After Watching Star Wars: The Last Jedi

Star Wars: The Last Jedi is finally here, and with it comes the answers to many of the questions that have been burning in fans’ minds for the past two years. However, like the very best of the franchise’s other offerings, for every question answered, two more are raised in its place.

This is your one and only spoiler warning because these are the 10 questions we have after watching Star Wars: The Last Jedi:

  1. How Did ‘DJ’ Know The Resistance’s Escape Plan?

Benicio Del Toro’s ‘DJ’ didn’t take long to live up to his reputation as a “shady character” with “unclear allegiances.” After he helps Finn and Rose infiltrate Supreme Leader Snoke’s Mega Star Destroyer (and they’re inevitably captured), we learn that ‘DJ’ had actually betrayed the duo because the First Order was ultimately the higher bidder. However, we then learn that he also told the First Order about the Resistance’s plan to abandon their cruiser using escape pods to retreat to Crait, which begs the question: How did ‘DJ’ know the Resistance was fleeing? The film doesn’t appear to answer this question, and while it’s a relatively small nit to pick, it’s still an element of the subplot that’s conspicuous by its absence.

  2. Are We Ever Going To Learn More About The Knights Of Ren?

In The Force Awakens, we were introduced to the Knights of Ren… sort of. It’s more like we were told about them, and although we did get a very brief glimpse of this group of dark side users in Rey’s vision, they were kept largely off the table in Episode VII so they could be presumably explored more in The Last Jedi – except they weren’t. In fact, they weren’t even so much as mentioned. Are they just a forgotten plot point, or will they be touched upon in further detail when J.J. Abrams returns for Episode IX?

  3. How Did Rey Get Back To The Millennium Falcon?

Arguably the best fight scene in The Last Jedi is the one in which Rey and Kylo Ren lay waste to the Elite Praetorian Guard, which is then followed by a brief power struggle between the duo, as well. However, when Kylo Ren comes to after the destruction of Rey’s lightsaber, General Hux tells him that Rey took off in one of Snoke’s escape pods. Fair enough, but the next time we see Rey, she’s in the gunner position of the Millennium Falcon, swooping in to aid the Resistance in their battle against the First Order on Crait. How, exactly, was she able to get in touch with Chewbacca to let him know she needed to be picked up? Aside from a broken lightsaber and a tracking device that Leia had the other half of, she seemed pretty empty-handed. You can probably rationalize this by saying there was a comm. device on the escape pod, so this isn’t too egregious, but it would have been nice to get some sort of in-story explanation.

  4. Who Was Telling The Truth About The Night Luke’s Jedi Temple Was Destroyed?

Between Luke, Kylo Ren, and Luke again, we got three different accounts of what happened the night that Luke’s Jedi Temple was burned to the ground. In the first version, Luke told Rey that the former Ben Solo betrayed him and destroyed the temple while Luke was buried in debris. Then, Kylo Ren said that Luke tried to kill him in his sleep and that he woke up and fought back before his uncle could slaughter him. Finally, Luke explains to Rey that he had a moment of weakness and, because he could sense the darkness in his nephew, he planned to kill him. However, he quickly came to his senses, but at that point, Ben had woken up and realized what Luke was going to do, prompting him to strike first. They say the truth usually lies somewhere in the middle, so the third version of the story is most likely the one that actually happened, but both Kylo Ren and Luke have proved that they can’t always be trusted, so you never know.

  5. What Happened To Luke’s Other Students?

While the nature of the aforementioned flashback differs depending on who’s telling the story, one thing that stays consistent is that when Ben betrayed Luke and became Kylo Ren, he killed some of the other students and took the rest with him. That being said, whatever happened to those other students? Some understandably assume they went on to form the Knights of Ren, but if that were the case, why wasn’t the group mentioned by name a single time in The Last Jedi? It could certainly be an oversight by Rian Johnson, but once again, maybe we’ll just need to wait until Episode IX to find out for sure.

  6. How Did The Jedi Texts End Up In The Millennium Falcon

After the remaining Resistance forces escape from Crait on the Millennium Falcon, we see Finn reach into a drawer to grab a blanket for the badly injured Rose. However, next to the blanket, we get a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it look at what appears to be the ancient Jedi texts. The last time we saw them, though, they were inside the hollowed-out Force tree, which Yoda’s Force Ghost set on fire. One could argue that Luke snuck the books onto the Falcon when he briefly boarded the ship earlier in the movie, but if that were the case, why would Luke react with panic when the tree was set ablaze if he knew there wasn’t anything in there? Perhaps it was Rey that took the sacred texts, but there’s not much in terms of evidence that really supports this aside from the fact that they still exist and they’re on the Falcon.

  7. Was Kylo Ren Telling The Truth About Rey’s Parents?

Who are Rey’s parents? It’s the question that drove fans crazy ever since they saw The Force Awakens. In The Last Jedi, though, we finally get our answer, and it’s not what most of us were expecting. According to Kylo Ren, Rey’s parents were nobodies; they were junkers who sold her to Unkar Plutt for drinking money. And to be fair, this was actually a satisfying reveal because it helps hammer home the point that you don’t have to be the son or daughter of someone special to be special, yourself – you can be the offspring of nobodies but still become someone incredible. Still, as touched upon earlier, Kylo Ren isn’t the most trustworthy narrator, so even though this was the most earnest we’d ever seen him, it’s always possible he was making this up to try and manipulate Rey.

  8. Is Snoke REALLY Dead?

One of the biggest shocks of The Last Jedi came when Kylo Ren used the Force to angle Rey’s lightsaber, which was laying beside Snoke, ever so slightly and then ignited it, killing the powerful Supreme Leader of the First Order. Did he really kill him, though? Another notable dark side user who was cut in half by a lightsaber was Darth Maul, and as we learned in The Clone Wars, he wasn’t really dead. Additionally, Snoke looks like he’s taken quite a few beatings in his lifetime, so who’s to say he hasn’t “died” and come back before? Then again, bringing him back could undermine the impact of Kylo Ren’s betrayal, so perhaps Snoke was simply meant to be a plot device used to elevate Kylo into the position of primary antagonist.

  9. Will Luke Return As A Force Ghost?

If Snoke’s death wasn’t the biggest shock of The Last Jedi, then it’s second only to Luke’s, which comes after the aging Jedi uses all of his life force to transmit an astral projection of himself to battle Kylo Ren on Crait. After fulfilling this final deed, we see Luke’s body disappear, leaving only a pile of his clothing behind, much like we witnessed with the deaths of Obi-Wan Kenobi and Yoda. That being said, can we expect to see Luke follow in their footsteps and return in Episode IX as a Force Ghost? The only reason to doubt this possibility is the fact that Rey says she could sense that Luke was at peace when he died. Upon death, most Jedi become one with the totality of the Force, but those who master the technique of retaining their identities to avoid becoming one with the Force are able to linger in the physical world. If Luke was truly at peace when he died, that would presumably mean he had no unfinished business in the land of the living, so it would be odd for him essentially refuse to let go.

  10. Will We See A New Generation Of Jedi? And If So, Who Will Train Them?

During Luke’s climactic duel with Kylo Ren, he tells his nephew that he won’t be the last Jedi. He’s presumably alluding to Rey carrying on the ways of the Jedi, but given the fact that she seemingly only received a few days training, is she even really a Jedi yet? (By Yoda’s account, Luke wasn’t even a Jedi yet when he visited him in Return of the Jedi). Of course, there was also the final shot of the movie that teased a Force-sensitive child on Canto Bight, but if there’s no one around to train Rey, then who’s going to train him? You might be able to stitch up a wound, but without formal training, good luck getting anyone to believe you’re a doctor.
