The 7 Best Moments From Captain Marvel

SPOILER WARNING: The following article contains major spoilers for Captain Marvel, in theaters now.

It took 10 years and 21 movies, but the Marvel Cinematic Universe finally has a female-led superhero solo film in the form of Captain Marvel.

The blockbuster is currently Certified Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes, with an 81 percent critic score and a 31 percent audience score – the latter of which is disproportionately skewed by online trolls. Regardless of ratings, though, few can deny that Captain Marvel has some truly memorable moments, and we here at Epicstream have compiled a list of what we think are the absolute best.

Check out our picks for the seven best moments from Captain Marvel and then let us know which moments you thought were the best in the comments section:

  1. The Opening Sequence

In November 2018, the comic book and entertainment industry lost a legend when longtime Marvel figurehead Stan Lee passed away at the age of 95. With Captain Marvel being the first MCU film to hit theaters since his death, Marvel Studios decided to pay tribute to Lee by inserting a special version of its iconic opening sequence ahead of the film. Instead of the superheroes of the MCU, we see various shots of Lee from his countless trademark cameos, followed by a black screen with the words, “Thank you, Stan.”

  2. Punching Skrulls

Shortly after Carol arrives on Earth, she realizes she’s not alone – several Skrulls came with her. The ensuing battle, which we got bits of in the trailer, involves our introduction to the young Nick Fury and Phil Coulson, along with the now iconic shot of Carol punching a kind old lady (aka a Skrull) in the face. As fun as it was to watch this moment in the trailers, it’s even better when you add in the stunned reactions of the bystanders, who gasp in disgust and attempt to restrain Carol, to no avail.

  3. Goose – All of Him

Early reviews and social media reactions for Captain Marvel made no qualms about declaring Goose – the orange cat that’s secretly a Flerken – the real star of the film. That being said, we won’t take anything away from the standout performances by Brie Larson, Samuel L. Jackson, Ben Mendelsohn and the like, but we will say that yes, Goose steals nearly every scene he’s in. Particularly once his true nature is revealed, Goose becomes an absolute highlight who adds plenty of laughs to help break up the more dramatic and action-packed story beats.

  4. The Black Box Reveal

From the very beginning of the film, we’re made aware that something is affecting Carol’s memories. She has no recollection of her life prior to joining Starforce. However, after she reunites with Maria Rambeau and confronts Talos, Carol discovers what really happened the day the rest of the world thought she died, courtesy of the black box from her jet. It turns out that Dr. Wendy Lawson was actually the Kree scientist Mar-Vell, who was attempting to end the Kree-Skrull War by creating a Light Speed Engine the Skrulls could use to escape the Kree. However, she was stopped by Yon-Rogg, who we learn isn’t a benevolent mentor to Carol but rather her captor. This is also when Carol gains her powers after the energy from the engine is absorbed into her body, erasing her memories in the process.

  5. The Battle at Mar-Vell’s Laboratory

After arriving on Mar-Vell’s orbiting laboratory, Carol is captured by Starforce and forced to confront the Supreme Intelligence. Much to the Kree’s surprise, though, Carol is able to overpower the Supreme Intelligence and remove her power-dampening implant. Meanwhile, Fury is able to retrieve the Tesseract, and the entire sequence sets the stage for what’s arguably the best action scene of the entire film…

  6. Carol Going Binary

With the power-dampener destroyed, there’s nothing to stop Carol from accessing her full potential, which she does by going full binary. Not only does she defeat Starforce but she also destroys the ballistic missiles fired by Ronan the Accuser, which causes him and his forces to retreat almost immediately. She then follows that up by besting Yon-Rogg and sending him back to Hala with a warning for the Supreme Intelligence.

  7. The Mid-Credits Scene

It wasn’t much of a stretch to imagine Captain Marvel would have some sort of connection to Avengers: Endgame, but not everyone expected to see Carol actually come face-to-face with Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. It happens during the film’s mid-credits scene when the Cap, Black Widow, War Machine and Bruce Banner are monitoring Nick Fury’s pager following his death in Infinity War. Then, when the signal suddenly stops, they turn around to find Carol standing there and asking where Fury is.

The stage has been set, and now, the countdown to Avengers: Endgame begins.
