Every Marvel Movie in Development by Fox

The future of 20th Century Fox is currently in a state of flux. Last December, it was reported that The Walt Disney Co.’s long-rumored intentions to purchase a major portion of the rival studio had become a reality. However, in May, Comcast attempted to throw a wrench in those plans by offering Fox a $60 billion all-cash deal to outbid the House of Mouse.

At this time, it’s not entirely clear which direction things will go, and that means the fate of the countless Fox-owned Marvel properties is anything but certain. Still, the studio has yet to pull the plug on any of the projects it’s announced over the past few months (or in some cases, years), so until we hear otherwise, here is every Marvel movie in development by Fox:

  1. Multiple Man

    Director: TBA

    Release Date: TBA

In November, Deadlinereported that Fox was developing a film centered on the clone-spawning mutant Jamie Madrox, aka Multiple Man, with James Franco starring as the titular character. Since then, no director or release date has been announced, but it was confirmed that Wonder Woman co-writer Allan Heinberg was penning the script, and that franchise veteran Simon Kinberg’s Genre Films would co-produce the project alongside Franco’s Ramona Films. Little else is known about the film at this time, other than the fact that Franco is apparently banking on Multiple Man earning a “Hard R” rating, a la Deadpool and Logan.

  2. Kitty Pryde

    Director: Tim Miller*

    Release Date: TBA

Shortly after 2018 kicked off, Collider revealed that Deadpool director Tim Miller was developing (and possibly directing) a Kitty Pryde solo film, bringing her to the forefront of the franchise after being relegated to minor roles in X-Men: The Last Stand and X-Men: Days of Future Past. However, while many were skeptical about the likelihood of the film ever making it to the big screen, hopes went up when it was announced just one month later that prolific Marvel-turned-DC Comics writer Brian Michael Bendis had been hired to write the script. Of course, Fox has remained tight-lipped on the status of the project in recent months, so where it stands at this time is anyone’s guess.

  3. Doctor Doom

    Director: Noah Hawley*

    Release Date: TBA

Despite the diminishing returns of Fox’s Fantastic Four franchise, Legion showrunner Noah Hawley shocked fans at Comic-Con International in San Diego last year when he teased that he was developing a solo Doctor Doom film. Things were relatively quiet for some time after that, but Hawley confirmed in January that, to his knowledge, the project was still in development, despite any potential studio mergers. Then, in March, he dished on his desire to create his Doom film in the same vein as Captain America: The Winter Soldier by making it more of a political thriller, which would certainly be interesting.

  4. Silver Surfer

    Director: TBA

    Release Date: TBA

The Sentinel of the Spaceways, unfortunately, wasn’t done justice by Fox in the past, but much like Doctor Doom, the studio decided it was still worth spinning the Silver Surfer out into his very own solo movie, with acclaimed Runaways writer Brian K. Vaughn attached to pen the script. The film was apparently one of several “secret” projects Fox had (or possibly still has) in the works, but no further details have emerged since the initial report first surfaced in February.

  5. Gambit

    Director: TBA

    Release Date: June 7, 2019

Gambit has the potential to be Fox’s next Deadpool in the sense that it’d be an absolute miracle if this film ever happens, let alone succeeds, given all the setbacks it’s faced. Since around 2014, Channing Tatum has been attached to play the titular Ragin’ Cajun mutant/thief Remy LeBeau, but in that time, three directors have come and gone (Rupert Wyatt, Doug Liman, and Gore Verbinski), and the script has undergone numerous rewrites. Nevertheless, Fox continues to press on, and while the film is expected to go into production on June 19 – director or not – it remains to be seen if that – or the tentative June 7, 2019 release date – holds true.

  6. X-Force

    Director: Drew Goddard

    Release Date: TBA

The fan-favorite mutant team is set to make a big splash in Deadpool 2 before eventually spinning out into a full-fledged X-Force movie, written and directed by former Daredevil showrunner Drew Goddard. He won’t be alone, though, as the film will be produced by Simon Kinberg, Lauren Shulder Donner, and Deadpool star Ryan Reynolds, with both him and Josh Brolin expected to reprise their respective Deadpool 2 roles. It’s unclear when Fox is aiming for X-Force to hit theaters, but with principal photography expected to begin this October, 2020 seems like a fairly safe bet. (Well, as safe as you can get when the studio is in the middle of a bidding war between two behemoths.)

  7. The New Mutants

    Director: Josh Boone

    Release Date: August 2, 2019

Originally slated for an April 2018 release, Josh Boone’s The New Mutants hit a major snag when it was pushed back by over a year. Apparently, the decision to push the film back so far was to allow time for additional photography to incorporate new characters, as well as to make the film more frightening so it falls more in line with the tone of the Demon Bear Saga source material. In any case, it’s all but certain that The New Mutants will actually make it to the big screen, but it will be interesting to see if the extensive reshoots end up doing more harm than good.

  8. X-Men: Dark Phoenix

    Director: Simon Kinberg

    Release Date: February 14, 2019

Another X-film whose release was pushed back (though not by nearly as much as The New Mutants) is X-Men: Dark Phoenix, which is Fox’s second attempt at bringing the classic Dark Phoenix Saga to the big screen. After the source material was used as the basis of the poorly received X-Men: The Last Stand, Simon Kinberg expressed his desire to craft a more faithful adaptation. Some, however, are wondering if Fox is trying to distance the film from being associated with the X-Men franchise, as it’s been reported that the studio has recently dropped the word “X-Men” from the title, rebranding it as just Dark Phoenix. Of course, that could simply be an effort to better appeal to general audiences, but nonetheless, this would make it the first core X-Men film to not have the team’s name in the title.
