Breaking Down the First Captain Marvel Trailer

Marvel Studios

It was two weeks ago that fans were treated to their first official look at Brie Larson’s Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel in all her cosmic glory. However, those photos pale in comparison to the brand new trailer that Marvel Studios dropped this morning during Good Morning America.

Follow along with us as we break down the first official Captain Marvel trailer:

  1. An Undoubtedly ‘90s Setting

In case there was any doubt that Captain Marvel takes place in the 1990s, the trailer kicks off with Carol crashing through the roof of a Blockbuster Video. In fact, it’s worth noting that the nearly defunct rental chain dropped the word “Video” from its name in 1994, meaning the film must take place during the early part of the decade.

  2. Carol Danvers, Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D.?

After she crash-lands on Earth, we get a shot of Carol sporting a leather jacket and an old school S.H.I.E.L.D. cap. Of course, while we know she’ll be working with S.H.I.E.L.D., she won’t be a full-fledged agent.

  3. First Contact With the Skrulls

In this next shot, we see Nick Fury clutching a gun in one hand and pressing an icepack to his head with the other. Meanwhile, someone appears to be performing an autopsy on a Skrull while another agent (presumably Phil Coulson) looks on.

  4. Hiding in Plain Sight

After Nick Fury says the words “space invasion,” we see a small shuttle leaving Earth’s orbit as a much larger ship suddenly turns off its stealth mode. That being said, it’s probably safe to assume this is a Skrull ship.

  5. Carol’s Powers in Action

It doesn’t take long for us to get our first look at Carol’s powers in action. After hopping onto the roof of a moving train, she clenches her first and fires off twin photon blasts, but who or what she’s firing at remains to be seen.

  6. When Fury Met Carol

After seeing and hearing from both Nick Fury and Carol Danvers separately, we finally see the two of them come face-to-face. Interestingly enough, Fury says that he was “ready to hang it up” before meeting Carol, which begs the question of what could have nearly led him to quit S.H.I.E.L.D.?

  7. The Kree Empire?

After Fury posits that Carol probably isn’t from around here, we get a shot of her staring out a window and looking down upon a massive city. This is presumably the Kree Empire.

  8. ‘I Keep Having These… Memories’

Of course, we know that Carol isn’t from the Kree Empire – she’s from Earth. Apparently, though, she doesn’t quite remember that she’s from Earth. She does, however, appear to still have glimpses of her former life fading in and out, including her time in the Air Force with Maria Rambeau.

  9. The Psyche-Magnitron?

In the comics, Carol gets her powers after she’s knocked into a Kree Psyche-Magnitron, which has the ability to turn imagination into reality. While we know Captain Marvel won’t be an origin story in the traditional sense, could we get a flashback that shows us how she became a human/Kree hybrid?

  10. Mar-Vell

We only get one shot of Jude Law’s Mar-Vell in the trailer. Some fans have speculated that, unlike his comic book counterpart, the on-screen incarnation of Mar-Vell will be a villain in the film. However, nothing in the trailer seems to suggest that being the case.

  11. Let’s Hope That’s a Skrull

Obviously, seeing Carol punch a sweet old lady in the face comes as quite a shock… unless you’re familiar with the Skrulls, who have the ability to shape shift. Considering the previous shot shows the Skrulls in their native form, we can probably assume the woman Carol decks with a massive right hook is a Skrull, as well.

  12. Ronan’s Return

Captain Marvel will see Lee Pace reprise his role as Ronan the Accuser, who died in 2014’s Guardians of the Galaxy. Here, we get a quick shot of him standing aboard a massive spacecraft, staring down on what’s presumably Earth.

  13. Young Coulson

After his untimely death in 2012’s Avengers, we’ll finally see the fan-favorite Agent Phil Coulson return to the big screen in Captain Marvel. What’s more, it’s a de-aged Phil Coulson, who we see sporting a much fuller head of hair than we’re traditionally accustomed to.

  14. The Mohawk

No Captain Marvel film would be complete without at least ONE shot of Carol rocking her iconic Mohawk from the comics.

  15. ‘I’m Not What You Think I Am’

The trailer ends with a picturesque shot of Captain Marvel emitting powerful light energy from her entire body, leaving fans with little doubt that she’s a force to be reckoned with.

Captain Marvel soars into theaters March 8, 2019.
