Breaking Down the Captain Marvel & Avengers: Endgame Super Bowl Teasers

Last night, during the broadcast of Super Bowl LIII, Marvel Studios dropped two teasers for the highly anticipated spring blockbusters Captain Marveland Avengers: Endgame.

Admittedly, both were incredibly brief, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t a lot to unpack from the new footage. Follow along with us as we break down both the Captain Marvel and Avengers: Endgame Super Bowl teasers:

  1. Higher, Further, Faster, Baby

The Captain Marvel teaser kicks off with Carol Danvers and Monica Rambeau during their time in the United States Air Force. It’s also the first time we hear Carol speak the film’s tagline, which comes directly from the comic book source material: “Higher, Further, Faster.”

  2. Sparring With Yon-Rogg

After months of speculation, we finally learned that Jude Law is playing Yon-Rogg in Captain Marvel. Here, we see him sparring with Carol in what’s either a very intense training session or perhaps an encounter fueled by true animosity. After all, the Yon-Rogg from the comics has no love for humans or human sympathizers.

  3. Going Binary

One of the most fascinating aspects of Captain Marvel in the comics is her stint as Binary, which was when she was arguably at her most powerful. We’ve yet to see how her MCU counterpart will compare to the source material, but from what we see here, it appears Carol will seemingly go full Binary and cement her status as the most powerful hero in the MCU.

  4. Happy Nick Fury

Have we ever seen Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury smile before? Perhaps he was far less cynical in his youth.

  5. In Memoriam

Moving on to the Avengers: Endgame teaser, we begin with the opening Marvel Studios title card that precedes most of the MCU trailers. This time, however, we’re reminded of the heroes who died in Infinity War, with quick shots of each fallen character in black, white and red.

  6. A Grieving Cap

After seeing shots of a largely empty New York City, we meet up with a visually distraught Steve Rogers, who appears to be attending some sort of group therapy for those who survived the Decimation. “Some people move on,” the voiceover says. “But not us.”

  7. Tony and Nebula

In the first trailer for Endgame, we learned that Tony Stark was floating aimlessly through space with limited resources. In this shot, though, it appears he and Nebula are refusing to give up hope, as we see them tinkering with the ship, perhaps in an attempt to get back to Earth.

  8. The Lone Guardian

Rocket Raccoon, of course, was the only surviving member of the Guardians of the Galaxy. Here, we see that he’s still alone, though his location remains unclear.

  9. Suiting Up

Scott Lang, who was absent from Infinity War, will finally join up with the remainder of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes in Endgame. Here, we see him and War Machine donning their helmets as they presumably prepare for a call to action.

  10. The Shield Returns

The last time we saw Captain America’s iconic shield was in the final moments of Captain America: Civil War, where he discarded it as the request of Iron Man. However, it appears he’ll reclaim his iconic weapon in Endgame, as evidenced by a shot of Cap securing the shield to his forearm. It’s worth noting, though, that he’s still clearly in shock, as we see him hesitate before securing the last strap.

  11. Avengers Assemble

The last shot is an ominous look at the remaining earthbound heroes at the Avengers compound. Whether they succeed in defeating Thanos – and which of them survive – remains to be seen.
