Breaking Down The First Ant-Man And The Wasp Trailer

The first official trailer for Marvel Studios’ third 2018 superhero blockbuster Ant-Man and the Wasp has finally arrived, and while the titular heroes are pint-sized, it appears as though they’re going to pack a massive punch. From the continuation of lingering plot threads to more size-altering shenanigans to faces new and old, follow along with us as we break down this exciting new footage.

  1. So THAT’S Why She Wasn’t In Civil War…

Ants aside, one of the elephants in the room in Captain America: Civil War was why Scott was recruited to fight alongside Team Cap but not Hope, who received a suit of her very own in Ant-Man’s mid-credits scene. Well, that’s addressed right off the bat, and apparently, what it all comes down to is that Scott never thought to ask her. It’s a shame, too, because as we’ll see later in the trailer, she certainly would have been a valuable asset.

  2. Ant-Man’s Grounded

Another thread from Civil War that still needed to be addressed was how Scott went from prisoner at the Raft to hero, once again. Obviously, it’s implied that Cap helps all of the prisoners escape, but would that mean Scott ended up on the run for the rest of his life? Apparently not, as evidenced by his police-issued ankle monitor. Still, we shouldn’t expect something as minor as house arrest to keep Ant-Man grounded for long.

  3. The Team’s On The Move

“Thanks to you, we had to run… We’re still running.” Those are the words Hope says to Scott as Hank quite literally packs up everything, including an entire office building, and leaves. Clearly, Scott’s decision to join Team Cap had widespread ramifications.

  4. Enter Goliath

From DC’s Perry White to Marvel’s Bill Foster, Laurence Fishburne joins the cast of Ant-Man and the Wasp as the scientist alter-ego of the size-changing hero Goliath. Judging by how the trailer’s cut, it looks as though he’ll have a hand in either creating or aiding Ghost, but that could just be clever editing. In any case, it’ll be interesting to see if Foster actually suits up, himself, or if he’s strictly relegated to the lab.

  5. Scott Learns To Love Again

The death of Scott’s incredible insect companion Antony was one of the most tragic moments in Ant-Man. (Well, save for Darren Cross killing a miniature sheep.) Nevertheless, it appears as though Scott will learn to love again, as we see him flying into battle on the back of another heroic ant.

  6. The Return Of Giant-Man

Now that we’ve seen Giant-Man in live-action, a cameo is pretty much going to be a requirement for any and all movies featuring Ant-Man moving forward. As we see in the trailer, Scott sizes up and emerges from the sea like Godzilla, much to the surprise of the civilians standing atop the ferry below.

  7. Enter Ghost

The aforementioned Darren Cross was arguably one the MCU’s weakest and least-interesting villains to date. However, Hannah John-Kamen’s Ghost already feels like a far more compelling antagonist, even after just getting one quick glimpse at her. Hopefully, the character doesn’t ultimately fall victim to Marvel Studios’ most prominent pitfall.

  8. LUIS!

Comedic relief or all-out show-stealer? That’s the question many fans found themselves pondering after seeing Michael Peña’s Luis in Ant-Man, and thankfully, he’ll be back for the sequel. Let’s just hope he has more stories for Scott.

  9. We All Live In A Tiny Submarine

Although this shot looks like a submarine surrounded by bizarre underwater life, it’s actually the Quantum Realm. Having escaped from it himself in Ant-Man, Scott will return to this dimension with Hope to try and rescue her mother Janet. Whether or not they succeed remains to be seen.

  10. Feel The Sting Of The Wasp

Our first real look as the Wasp in live-action is every bit as incredible as we could have hoped for. Dodging chef’s knives, flying, and shooting energy blasts surely aren’t the only things in store for us when we actually see her on the big screen, but in the meantime, they certainly have our attention.

  11. PEZ For Days

An Ant-Man movie wouldn’t be complete without an oversized toy or novelty item of some sort. In this case, it’s a Hello Kitty PEZ dispenser, which – regardless of how much you love that property – would be a terrible thing to be crushed to death by.

Ant-Man and the Wasp hits theaters July 6, 2018.
