7 Things We Learned From the Game of Thrones Season 8 Trailer

The eighth and final season of the hit HBO drama Game of Thrones premieres in just over one month, and in anticipation of the beginning of the end, HBO has released the first full-length trailer for Season 8.

While there are only two minutes of footage, though, we still learned some key information about the upcoming season. So, with that in mind, here are six things we learned from the Game of Thrones Season 8 trailer:

  1. Arya Has Dragonglass

Early on in the trailer, we see Arya Stark running from someone… or something. Soon after, though, we hear her say, “I know death. He’s got many faces. I look forward to seeing this one.” Meanwhile, the young Stark girl is clutching what appears to be a dragonglass blade. This is important, of course, because dragonglass is one of the two items capable of killing White Walkers, the other being Valyrian steel (which she also possesses).

  2. The Golden Company Is Coming

At the end of Season 7, Euron Greyjoy set off to Essos to bring the Golden Company to Westeros and ensure Cersei maintains her iron grip on the Iron Throne. Here, we see the Golden Company in the flesh, meaning Jon Snow and Daenerys Targaryen will likely be fighting a war on two fronts, as the White Walkers and the Night King won’t be their only concerns.

  3. Tormund Lives!

The fate of the fan-favorite Tormund Giantsbane was shrouded in mystery when Season 7 ended. Did he die when the Wall was destroyed by the Night King? Well, as we clearly see, Tormund is alive and well. What’s more, the flame-sword-wielding Beric is also alive, which is yet another testament to his ability to cheat death.

  4. Jaime Fights for the Living

"I promised to fight for the living,” we hear Jaime Lannister say in the trailer. “I intend to keep that promise." This is good news because when we last saw Jaime, it wasn’t entirely clear where his allegiances lied. Clearly, he doesn’t want to align with Cersei, but he also doesn’t want to allow the White Walkers to bring a never-ending Winter to Westeros.

  5. Gendry Will Be a Key Player

Gendry Baratheon is briefly seen returning to his blacksmith roots. One has to imagine, though, that he’s working on forging weapons of Valyrian steel. If that’s the case, he’ll be a crucial component when it comes to defeating the White Walkers. Furthermore, as the bastard son of Robert Baratheon, Gendry has a pretty legitimate claim to the Iron Throne in his own right.

  6. Jon Snow (Maybe) Rides a Dragon

Here, we see Daenerys and Jon approaching the former’s two remaining dragons, Drogon and Rhaegal. While the trailer stops short of showing the pair riding into battle together, one can assume we’re going to see Jon Snow ride a dragon in Season 8, which will be an incredibly crowd-pleasing moment, should it come to fruition.

  7. The Final Battle Will Be Epic

As if we needed a trailer to inform us that the battle between the Army of the Living and the Army of the Dead would be epic. Nevertheless, there’s something about seeing thousands of soldiers in formation and the ominous footsteps of an undead horse that really emphasize just how close we are to seeing arguably the greatest final season of television of all-time!
