5 Things That Would Ruin Avengers: Infinity War

This April, everything Marvel Studios has been building towards over the past decade will finally culminate with its biggest blockbuster to date, Avengers: Infinity War. However, despite the impeccable track record of both Marvel and the Russo Brothers, there’s still the possibility that this third installment in the Avengers franchise could leave fans disappointed.

We here at Epicstream certainly hope that’s not the case, but in the spirit of playing devil’s advocate, here are 5 things that would ruin Avengers: Infinity War:

  1. Too Much Humor

For a number of years, each and every MCU film had its own distinct tone, but more and more, we’re seeing movies that rely heavily on humor to help carry the plot. In fact, in 2017 alone, all three of Marvel Studios’ offerings (Spider-Man: Homecoming, Thor: Ragnarok, and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2) were as much comedies as they were action films. Of course, that’s not necessarily a bad thing, but in the case of Infinity War, an overabundance of jokes would only serve to undermine what should essentially be the MCU film with the biggest stakes yet. A couple of laughs here or there are to be expected, but let’s hope the Russos keep the tone closer to Winter Soldier than Civil War.

  2. A Watered-Down Thanos

For the better part of the last 10 years, the Mad Titan Thanos has been being built up as the ultimate threat of the MCU. He was the true mastermind behind Loki and the Chitauri’s attack on Earth in The Avengers and judging by his post-credits appearance in Age of Ultron, it’s probably safe to assume he’s been pulling even more strings in the background. That being said, the last thing fans want to see is another Ultron, Malekith, or Ronan – villains who were played up in the trailers but ultimately fell short in the actual films. Thanos shouldn’t spout one-liners (see previous entry) or feel like he isn’t contributing anything to the plot, nor should he be presented as a one-note CGI mess with no real motivations for his actions. He’s the most powerful being the Avengers will have ever faced, and that absolutely needs to come through in the film.

    And speaking of powerful…

  3. A Watered-Down Infinity Gauntlet

Perhaps equally as disappointing as a watered-down version of Thanos would be a watered-down version of the Infinity Gauntlet. The gauntlet is arguably the most powerful item in the entire Marvel Universe, and that level of power needs to translate to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as well. Thankfully, this shouldn’t be a problem, since we’ve already seen the immense power of five of the six Infinity Stones on display in previous films. However, come Infinity War, when Thanos fully assembles the Infinity Gauntlet, it should actually feel a full six times more powerful than each individual stone.

  4. No Major Casualties

Thus far, we’ve yet to see any truly impactful deaths in the MCU. Sure, Yondu’s death was sad, but he wasn’t really a major character. The same can be said for Odin, and when it comes to Quicksilver, no one really even batted an eye when he was killed. In order to raise the stakes to the earth-shattering proportions Infinity War deserves, one or more truly major characters need to die. In fact, it wouldn’t even need to be a permanent death, either. Considering we’re dealing with the all-powerful Infinity Gauntlet, complete with the Time Stone, it would actually make sense for Thanos to kill an Avenger or two, only for them to be brought back into the fold once the fourth Avengers film arrives. Whether or not Marvel has the courage to take one of its top players off the table, permanently or temporarily, remains to be seen, but there’s no denying it would help sell Thanos as the most formidable foe the MCU has ever seen.

  5. A Happy Ending

Avengers: Infinity War needs to end on a dour not, plain and simple. It can’t end with a reserved sense of hope, like Civil War or Thor: Ragnarok – each of which had far happier endings than their comic-book-counterparts. Infinity War should end with the Avengers and the Guardians of the Galaxy on the ropes while Thanos stands tall. Given the fact that this was originally supposed to be a two-part movie, it’s highly possible we’ll get that sort of cliffhanger ending, but let’s hope the decision to make Avengers 3 and 4 two distinct films didn’t alter things too drastically.

Avengers: Infinity War assembles in theaters April 27.
