Can These Five Changes Save the DCEU From Certain Demise?

If there’s anything we learned from the recently concluded DC FanDome, it’s that things are looking hella promising for the future of the DC films in general. And I genuinely believe that this is the opening they need to finally match the Marvel Cinematic Universe, if not outstrip it. That being said, here are some of the reasons why I think DC’s glory days are upon us.

  1. They’re Finally Listening to the Fans

More often than not, it's the fans, especially the diehard ones, who know better when it comes to the superhero film genre and they’ve proven time and time again that they will stop at nothing, and I mean absolutely nothing to get what they want. Take for instance the proverbial Snyder Cut movement. Kickstarting in late 2017, some people have lost faith in the brigade and thought the project will never see the light of day. Others even thought that it was nothing more than a myth and then, voila! Thanks to the collective effort of the fans, it’s finally happening. But give credit where credit is due though as none of this would be possible had DC and Warner Bros. not listen to the fans.

  2. DC’s Recent Releases Have Been Pretty Solid

The DC Extended Universe’s first two releases — 2013’s Man of Steel and 2016’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice were polarizing films, to say the least, and since the franchise’s inception seven years ago, it seems like they’ve had a hard time getting the ball rolling. But one can argue that the rise of the franchise truly began with 2017’s Wonder Woman and by the looks of it, the good folks over at DC and Warner Bros. have been able to ride the wave of momentum since. Sure, the theatrical cut of Justice League aka “Josstice League” failed to live up to the hype — for reasons we're all pretty much aware of by now but succeeding flicks like Aquaman, Shazam! and even Birds of Prey have been pretty enjoyable. In fact, they have restored a lot of fans’ energy and enthusiasm for the DCEU.

  3. They’re Also Tapping Into the Multiverse

As revealed during the inaugural DC FanDome, the DCEU is set to enter the multiverse with the upcoming The Flash film starring Ezra Miller. Marvel Studios has teased the concept of the multiverse several times in the past, most notably in Spider-Man: Far From Home but nothing really in-depth was explored. Sure, the upcoming 'Doctor Strange' sequel could very well be our first true taste of the multiverse, but we still have no idea what exactly they're planning for the said project. Now, going back to DC, it's definitely a smart move on their part to take a gamble and delve into the multiverse because it erases the confusion amongst casual viewers while building up potential crossover stories in the future.

  4. Their Upcoming Slate of Projects Shows a Lot of Promise

The year 2021 looks extremely promising for DC films and as exaggerated as it may sound, this could be the true turning point for the franchise. Our geek hearts are guaranteed to explode with the release of three highly anticipated projects — The Suicide Squad, Justice League: The Snyder Cut, and The Batman. And boy, that’s just the tip of the iceberg! Things are bound to get even grander with the arrival of Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam film. Of course, let's not forget other projects like Aquaman 2 and Shazam!: Fury of the Gods. Judging by the stuff we saw during the FanDome, the entire DCEU has a brand new feel to it. It almost feels like they're experiencing a "rebirth" (no pun intended) of their own.

  5. Fans Have Renewed Interest with the Franchise

For how big of a gamble putting up a virtual convention was, not to mention missing the annual San Diego Comic-Con, DC made a brilliant move capitalizing on Marvel Studios’ conspicuous silence and the pay-off was incredibly huge. Now, thanks to the exciting reveals and announcements during DC FanDome, fans have renewed interest and enthusiasm has been reinvigorated which is always a good thing. Don't believe me? Just check out the topics on Facebook and Twitter. It's been a couple of weeks and geeks are still gushing about DC. All aboard the hype train, indeed!
