5 Characters Surprisingly Missing From Avengers: Infinity War

WARNING: The following article contains major spoilers for Avengers: Infinity War, now in theaters nationwide.

In Avengers: Infinity War, directors Joe and Anthony Russo had the tedious task of juggling a massive ensemble cast of characters, and to their credit, they did a commendable job giving everyone an appropriate amount of screen time. However, even with a runtime of two and a half hours, there was no way the film would be able to include everyone from the previous 17 Marvel Studios films.

Still, there were a select few characters fans were absolutely expecting to see on-screen – either because of their importance to the franchise or because of where their stories left off – that were nowhere to be found. On that note, here are five characters surprisingly missing from Avengers: Infinity War:

  1. Korg

The hilarious Kronan warrior Korg was introduced in Thor: Ragnarok, and when we last saw him, he was onboard the Statesman with the God of Thunder, several other Sakaaran refugees, and everyone who had escaped from Asgard before its destruction. However, despite Infinity War beginning just moments after Korg’s final scene in Ragnarok, we don’t see him at all in the film. Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige has already confirmed Korg’s MCU career isn’t over, so we can at least rule out the possibility that he was killed by Thanos and/or the Black Order. Still, where was he?

  2. Valkyrie

Another fan-favorite from Thor: Ragnarok who was last seen on the Statesman is Valkyrie, who was also conspicuous by her absence in Infinity War. Many fans believed this meant she was among the dead Asgardians scattered across the ship following Thanos’ attack, but would Marvel really kill such a crowd-pleasing character off-camera like that? Apparently not, because according to Joe Russo, Valkyrie (and perhaps Korg) was among several passengers who fled the Statesman in an escape pod. It does seem odd, though, that Valkyrie would run from a fight after her character arc in Ragnarok saw her reclaim her lost sense of Asgardian pride. Perhaps she simply knew she didn’t stand a chance against the Mad Titan and her old survival instincts kicked in.

  3. Nakia

Few can argue that the women truly stole the show in Black Panther, but it wasn’t just Shuri and Okoye who were the highlights – there was also the War Dog and T’Challa’s love interest Nakia. However, while both Shuri and Okoye have roles to play in Infinity War, Nakia is MIA. Of course, the most likely explanation for her absence is that she’s in Oakland, CA at the Wakandan Outreach Center T’Challa said was in the works at the end of Black Panther. After all, Nakia was going to be in charge of the facility upon its completion. Still, some expository dialogue to give viewers a definitive answer to Nakia’s whereabouts certainly would have been nice.

  4. Ant-Man

After stealing the show in Captain America: Civil War’s airport fight scene, Scott Lang/Ant-Man was a shoe-in to make waves again in Infinity War. However, as we learn relatively early in the film, he – along with our next entry – took a deal in which he would be placed on house arrest in the aftermath of the Sokovia Accords because he has a family to consider. Admittedly, his omission was probably for the best, too, because his size-altering abilities make him a grossly underappreciated powerhouse, and it was important for Thanos to come off as nigh unbeatable.

  5. Hawkeye

Much like Ant-Man, Clint Barton/Hawkeye was also missing from Infinity War because he was under house arrest. This was perhaps the most shocking absence, though, because Hawkeye is a founding member of the MCU’s Avengers. However, set photos seem to confirm that not only is he guaranteed for Avengers 4, but that he may even adopt the Ronin gimmick his comic book counterpart took up at one point. Unfortunately, that’s also leading some fans to speculate that Clint’s family doesn’t survive Thanos’ death snap.
