The new Ghostbusters movie promises to deliver a team of ladies kicking butt. But there are lots of powerful female relationships to celebrate in sci-fi and fantasy, whether romantic or platonic. Let’s take a look at some of the most awesome relationships between heroic leading ladies. Be sure to mention your favorites, whether on this list or otherwise, in the comments!
Throughout Jessica Jones, Jessica’s relationship with her adoptive sister Trish saves her again and again. In turn, Jessica saved Trish from her abusive mother and helps her become a hero. Trish is definitely Jessica’s greatest source of support and it’s only together that they manage to take down one of the most dastardly villains in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Jessica tells Trish “I love you” in one of the most powerful moments of the series- and it’s implied these are words she would never say to anyone else.
Sailor Moon is a show all about girls empowering each other and the bond between the all-female Sailor Soldier crew is heartwrenching and epic. These girls repeatedly die for each other, bring each other back from the brink of death and save the universe with the pure power of their love for each other. It’s a friendship that literally transcends lifetimes.
And it’s not all melodramatics- we also see them get into silly bickering matches, hang out at the arcade and act like any teenage girlfriends. And of course, Sailor Neptune and Sailor Uranus have that beautiful time-transcending romance that gave many a queer girl validation and got her heart fluttering.
Xena and Gabrielle’s relationship was what made Xena: Warrior Princess such a powerful tale for many women. Gabrielle is a dissatisfied farm girl before she is saved by Xena. She’s inspired to follow in Xena’s footsteps and develops into a wonderful warrior in her own right. The bond between these women save them (and the world) again and again. They are literal soulmates- their souls are bound together throughout time.
The not-so-subtle romantic subtext between Xena and Gabrielle made them very important to the women-loving-women community. The producer of the Xena reboot has implied that this relationship will finally be made explicit in the planned remake.
The boys can save the day but no one does it better than the Birds of Prey, DC Comics premiere female superhero team! The team was started when Barbara Gordon (formerly Batgirl, but after being paralyzed she became the superhacker Oracle) recruited Dinah Lance, The Black Canary, as her partner. Both women helped each other rebuild and heal when their lives were falling apart, and they busted plenty of bad guys heads in the process. After this, many other women joined the team and similarly found a new lease on life. The team became a force to be reckoned with, toppling every type of evil from corrupt politicians to alien menaces. These women save many innocent people, but they also saved each other- all while being snarky, irreverent and awesome.
