Top 14 Reasons Why People Might Enjoy Deadpool 2 More Than The First Film

Warning: Major movie spoilers coming up.

After seeing Deadpool 2, I immediately wanted to see it again. So, I did. Although I found it riddled with some glaring flaws, I found the sequel to the beloved anti-hero in a red suit flick really entertaining. I never got bored watching this film and to be honest, I think I like it more than the first one (Disclaimer: technicality and plot-wise, I thought that the first film was better executed). These are our picks on why many fans of the 'merc with a mouth' may find the sequel more enjoyable.

  1. Cameos? The Sequel Got Them

Didn't we hear the grumbles of Deadpool saying that the studio is not funding big to cast some major X-Men characters? (coughs Hugh Jackman) Well, we do see a split-second cameos from Nicholas Hoult as Beast, Evan Peters as Quicksilver, Tye Sheridan as Cyclops, Alexandra Shipp as Storm, and Professor X himself played by James McAvoy. We also saw Hugh Jackman... However, it's just a stock footage of him fighting with Deadpool in the X-Men: Origins (more on that one later).

You may have missed some of these cameos though. Matt Damon was one of the two rednecks talking as Cable arrived in the scene. We also saw Brad Pitt who was rumored to be cast as Cable. Only, it was revealed that he was cast as the Vanisher when he got electrocuted. The last one was Ryan Reynolds himself as the Juggernaut. It was a mystery whether the original Juggernaut from The Last Stand, Vinnie Jones, got the part. It turned out that it was Reynolds who provided the voice work for the monstrous giant.

  2. Sweet Bromance

The love-hate relationship between Deadpool and Colossus has turned into a pure platonic love. Er, scratch that platonic part when you try to win him over Say Anything-style with a matching mini-boombox, some ass groping, and insane amounts of manly hugs. This ship has DEFINITELY sailed.

It seems the death of Vanessa caused Wade to play for the same team. She even warned Wade to not to "do it" with Colossus. That's putting it mildly. We also saw him casually flirting with Cable a bit... NAH, it's just for comedic effect. Or, IS IT?

  3. Ripping Off Iconic Movies in the Opening Credits (Ft. Celine Dion)

I gotta admit that I loved the Deadpool's originality of its opening credits. However, the sequel does the opposite, taking some inspirations from James Bond and Flashdance. After Vanessa's death, it quickly played the James Bond-inspired opening meant to increase the dramatic effect while poking fun at it at the same time. A power ballad plays with Celine Dion's "Ashes".

The last part was the Deadpool version of the provocative Flashdance scene. Instead of showering himself with water, he showered with bullets. Probably, an imagery of Wade's depression over his loss...  But, who are we kidding? This is a Deadpool film.

  4. Domino's Dominance

Okay, Deadpool may make some racist and misogynistic jokes. It's no secret that Marvel is aiming to bring some strong female characters of color. After watching Deadpool 2, Domino became one of my most favorite mutants.

She provides a much-needed contrast to the gory, violent, and rugged world of Deadpool. In a sequence where Deadpool mocks her power of luck, the black Black Widow shows some finesse and refined skills in getting things done. Zazie Beetz played the role with a nice mesh of swag and coolness.

I have a weird feeling that she is one of the Marvel characters that will be hardest to kill. From avoiding falling debris and dodging shots from her enemies, she always catches a break. Every. Single. Time.

  5. Awesome Soundtrack

The selection of the film's soundtrack for each scene is fantastic. It's a combination of some well-known show tunes, sappy love songs, and an upbeat dubstep mix. Enya's Only Time and Tomorrow were played in some of the action sequences, which earned laughs from the audience.

The most memorable song from Deadpool 2 is probably an unplugged version of the 80's hit Take on Me by A-ha that is played during the most emotional moment in Deadpool 2. Nevertheless, we can expect to hear great music from this franchise... Hey! Do You Want to Build a Snowman does sound like Papa, Can You Hear Me from Yentl.

  6. Firefist's Charm, Wit, and Bravery

Looks like the Human Torch has some competition for being... err, fiery. Firefist also has a knack for pop culture references. Peter Parker from the MCU approves. His backstory of him being abused then turning into an angry kid is a bit cliché. However, the writers turned it into some sort of connection to Wade Wilson's character.

The Deadpool franchise has turned this obscure comic book character into a super-likable fierce young man with cool powers (the irony). Deadpool and Firefist duo has a strong bond. There are some hilarious moments when they are together on screen. Julian Dennison played the character really well. He shatters the stereotypes to what the superheroes should look or sound like.

  7. Return of the Juggernaut

Yep. The giant mutant from which we last see in the X-Men: The Last Stand is back!

It turns out that the Juggernaut is in the Ice Box after all. However, his look significantly changed because he is a CGI in the movie. He is out to take no prisoners as he causes some major destruction along the way.

The biggest guy in the Ice Box has some really solid moments including ripping Deadpool in half and his CGI battle with Colossus. Although it's really nice to see this wrecking giant returns, we are left wanting more from him. We really hope Juggernaut is not dead after being electrocuted. Maybe, the writers are just cooking a steaming bowl of foreshadowing of him becoming a major villain for this franchise.

  8. Extended Fourth Wall Breaking, with Shots on DCEU

Be it calling Cable as Thanos or commenting on the flaws of its screenplay, Deadpool has a lot to say about everything, including some blows for the DC movie adaptation. He also has something to say about sexism and racism. He even accused Cable of being a racist after killing Black Tom and asking Dopinder to turn off the Hindu music in his car.

This merc with a mouth also made some backhanded references on Batman, DC's dark characters, and the Green Lantern, which Ryan Reynolds starred in. A DCEU retaliation would be interesting. Burning Deadpool sounds fun. Oh wait...

  9. Tender Moments

Deadpool aka Wade Wilson is a softie when it comes to Vanessa.

So, she dies on this one. Wade became depressed and vulnerable at times. However, those moments are interrupted with jokes in the first and second acts. In the third act, the scene where Deadpool sacrificed himself by taking a bullet for Russell (Firefist) is really heartfelt. Darn it, he is still making jokes even in his dying moments.

We only get a single sequence that is really emotional and no jokes were made. That is when Wade is briefly reunited with Vanessa. Wade thought that he will finally be with Vanessa. However, she told him that it's not the time for him to go because he has a family to take care of. Before going back, Vanessa asked Wade, "Kiss me like you missed me, Red."  I'm not crying. You're crying!

  10. Better and Longer Action Scenes

Well, what do you expect from the director of John Wick? I really can't say anything bad about the action in this movie. The choreography, stunt work, camera work, and shot edits are really spot-on. There are some awesome hand-to-hand combats, chase sequences, and a big rescue mission went wrong. Josh Brolin and Ryan Reynolds did a terrific job on their fight scenes, flawlessly executing some mixed martial arts moves with their mutant abilities.

The scenes are violent yet fun at the same time. Watch out for an earth-shattering (literally and figuratively) highway fight sequence. That sequence is done so well with long shots of hand-to-hand combats, focusing on Domino's unique abilities in a full picture, and some road rage drama featuring an unwelcome guest.

  11. Complexities of Cable

After playing Thanos from Avengers: Infinity War, Josh Brolin also does a great job playing Cable. He traveled from the future to fix something from the past. He is a skillful, clever, and focused warrior that is out to get everyone on his way.

During the first and earlier part of the second half, we don't really know much about him. He is stoic and acts like a stereotypical bad guy. When we asked the remaining members of X-Force for help, his motivation for doing things is revealed.

In the third act, we are introduced to a new dimension to his character: the caring side. He is apparently damaged when Firefist (in the future) killed off his daughter and his wife. We then see him carrying his daughter's bloodstained teddy bear as he fulfills to change that.

Fun fact: Cable is the son of Scott Summers (Cyclops) and Madelyne Pryor (Jean Grey's clone) in the comics.

  12. Formation of the X-Force

Looks like the family is not an 'F' word after all.

This group of mutants has an excellent chemistry and each of the members have a unique set of skills. More importantly, Deadpool has found a family in them. From the get-go, the main message that the movie wants to come across is the importance of family. Not exactly those who are related in blood but those who got your back when you're down.

In the third act, the mutants show their care from one another. Be it Wade looking out for Russell or Cable using the last charge on his time-traveling device to save Wade, X-Force is more than just a group. They are family. Cue in Papa, Can You Hear Me.

  13. Deadpool Being Deadpool

It seems that Deadpool throws quite a lot of references in this movie more than the first.  Moreover, the writers took into account the criticisms they got for not showing Deadpool's pansexuality in the first film.

Actually, we see even a different side of him this time around. He is a man who is dealing with a recent loss. All these complexities for the Deadpool character would be a trainwreck when they are put together. Luckily, Ryan Reynolds played the part extremely good. Furthermore, it really helps that the actor is also part of the writing and development process of the movie. Because of that, he gets a very grounded perspective of what Deadpool/Wade Wilson is like.

That Deadpool with kid's legs joke never gets old. We definitely see all of him. Some things cannot be left unseen.

  14. Stomach-Bustin' End Credits Scene

The award for the best end credits scene in a movie goes to this film.

Deadpool 2 saves the funniest bit for last. It involves a time-traveling Deadpool who fixes certain issues in the past. Of course, he saved Vanessa from her death by throwing a cream cheese spreader to her killer with a better aim. He didn't stop there. Deadpool kills the version of himself in the X-Men: Origins, "clearing up" the messed up X-Men timeline.

Finally, Deadpool shots Ryan Reynolds before he takes on the role of the Green Lantern, which turned out to be a disaster. This makes a hilarious coup de grace for the entire DC universe. Ryan sends his regards. But, as Deadpool puts it, that's just lazy writing.

Good thing they omitted Deadpool killing baby Hitler. That would have been too much.
