10 Unanswered Questions After Watching Avengers: Endgame

WARNING: The following article contains major spoilers for Avengers: Endgame, now in theaters.

Not even one week since its release and Marvel Studios has already smashed record after record with its latest superhero blockbuster, Avengers: Endgame. However, for a film that’s supposedly the exclamation point on the last 11 years and 21 chapters of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, there are still quite a few unanswered questions.

Some will surely be answered in future MCU movies while others may be addressed in Disney+ series. Until then, though, here are 10 questions we have after Avengers: Endgame:

  1. Did the Movie Set Up Loki’s Disney+ Series?

Speaking of Disney+, we know that Tom Hiddleston will reprise his role as the God of Mischief for a Loki series on the streaming platform. That being said, does the 2012 Loki using the Tesseract to escape from S.H.I.E.L.D./Avengers custody directly set up his show? There have been rumblings about the series being a prequel, but with a time-displaced Loki now in possession of the Space Stone, it’s easy to see how Marvel could have subtlety turned Avengers: Endgame into a backdoor pilot of sorts.

  2. Is Falcon Really the New Captain America?

In the final moments of Endgame, we get a moment practically ripped straight from the comics in which an elderly Steve Rogers passes on the mantle (and shield) of Captain America to Sam Wilson, aka Falcon. Does this mean the next time we see Sam, he’ll be the new Cap? Much like Loki, Sam and Bucky are returning for a Disney+ series, but the title, Falcon and Winter Soldier, seems to imply Sam will retain his avian alias. Then again, it’s possible the show could be about how he transitions from Falcon to the new Cap, with Bucky helping him along the way.

  3. How Does Cap Return the Soul Stone?

Prior to meeting Old Man Cap, the present-day Steve Rogers sets off to return the six Infinity Stones to their respective timelines. This begs the question, though: how in the hell does Cap return the Soul Stone? The Soul Stone, of course, was located on Vormir under the watchful eye of the Red Skull. Does that mean Cap had to confront his old nemesis again? What’s more, the Soul Stone is unique in that one must sacrifice someone they love in order to retrieve it. To return it, does Cap simply hand it back to the Red Skull and go on his merry way?

  4. Is Black Widow Really Dead?

Again, in order to retrieve the Soul Stone, one must sacrifice someone they love, which is what happens with Hawkeye and Black Widow (albeit under the most conflicted of circumstances). If Cap returns the stone, though, does that mean Natasha returns? The phrase “a soul for a soul” would certainly lend credence to this theory, along with the knowledge that we’re getting a Black Widow solo movie in the near future. However, it is a prequel, and given the nuances of the Soul Stone and the rules of time travel established in Endgame, it’s more likely than not that Natasha – at least the present-day incarnation – is gone for good.

  5. What Happened to Gamora?

Like Black Widow, Gamora was also a sacrificial lamb used to obtain the Soul Stone. However, in Endgame, her 2014 counterpart is transported to the future, where she’s reunited with Peter Quill. After Thanos is defeated, though, she’s nowhere to be found, and we’re left with a scene of Star-Lord attempting to locate her from the Benatar. So, was Gamora dusted along with the rest of Thanos’ cohorts? Probably not. The more likely scenario is that she and the present-day Nebula took off, which could drive the plot of the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

  6. How Does Vision Return?

Not to sound like a broken record but we know Scarlet Witch and Vision will return because they’re headlining a Disney+ series. However, while the former was resurrected in Endgame, we didn’t see the return of the iconic synthezoid. With WandaVision on the horizon, it stands to reason that we’ll have to wait until the series debuts to learn how Vision is brought back into the fold, whether it’s that he’s rebuilt or simply a machination of Scarlet Witch’s reality-warping powers.

  7. Is Thor a Full-Fledged Guardian of the Galaxy?

When we part ways with the Guardians of the Galaxy, Star-Lord is attempting to locate Gamora, but that doesn’t mean the team is shorthanded. Joining the band of space-traversing misfits is Thor, but does this mean he’s officially part of the crew? Considering the tonal similarities between Thor: Ragnarok and the GotG films, the God of Thunder would certainly make a good fit. Plus, save for Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth is the most likely of the original six Avengers to reprise his role in another blockbuster film, so perhaps Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will truly be Asgardians of the Galaxy.

  8. Was Cap Still Cap in the Past?

The time travel rules Endgame set up were confusing, to say the least. With that in mind, one can’t help but wonder if the Steve Rogers who lived a long and happy life with Peggy Carter was ever Captain America in that timeline. In the present, he was most certainly Cap, but by traveling to the past, he created a fork in his own history. Basically, Steve was Cap from 2012 until 2023, went back to presumably the 1940s, lived a life with Peggy from then until her death in 2016, then resurfaced in 2023 as Old Man Cap to give Sam his shield. Where did he get that shield, though? Was it from his time as Captain America in the past? Was he Captain America in the past? Again, it’s confusing.

  9. Will We See the Ramifications of the Time Jump?

Speaking of confusing, when all is said and done, those who survived the decimation from Infinity War have aged five years, while those who were resurrected were brought into 2023 without ever having aged at all. That being said, are we ever going to see the ramifications this sort of upheaval has on the greater MCU? After all, marriages and friendships were probably ruined, careers were probably ended and families were probably left in shambles. Spider-Man: Far From Home will presumably acknowledge this, but that movie already has a lot on its plate between Mysterio and the Elementals, so who knows if we’ll ever get a real answer?

  10. Is ‘The Avengers’ Still a Thing?

With Iron Man and Black Widow dead, Thor presumably joining the Guardians of the Galaxy, Steve passing on the mantle of Captain America to Sam and Hawkeye poised to pass the torch to Kate Bishop in yet another Disney+ series, does the future of the MCU still include the Avengers? Obviously, if we do see Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, it will be a radically different incarnation of the team. Will it still be the Avengers, though? Only time will tell.
