10 Best Comic Book Movie Moments Of 2017

2017 was a pretty impressive year for movies, but among the countless blockbusters that hit theaters, few can argue that comic book movies reigned supreme. With that in mind, we here at Epicstream decided to look back at the 10 best comic book movie moments from 2017:

  1. Yondu’s Revenge – Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2

While Yondu didn’t get nearly as much screen time in Guardians of the Galaxy as he does in the sequel, few can argue that he stole the show in his own right in the first film when he used his yaka arrow to massacre a whole squad of Ronan’s soldiers. Naturally, the stakes needed to be raised in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, and they certainly were when Yondu used the same weapon to slaughter an entire ship full of rebellious Ravagers. Accusing Yondu of going soft, his fellow space pirates declare mutiny and throw their leader into the brig. However, when Kraglin sees the error of his ways, he helps Yondu escape, and once Rocket equips him with his new prototype fin, he sends his yaka arrow one-by-one through the torsos of each of his former allies. OK, maybe Rocket and Groot get a few good shots in, but it’s largely Yondu that sends the Ravagers to their graves.

  2. The Amazing Spider-Man #33 Homage – Spider-Man: Homecoming

The third act of Spider-Man: Homecoming is home to one of the most powerful scenes in the film, which sees Peter pinned beneath a massive pile of rubble. After a moment of introspection, Peter is able to find his inner strength and muscle his way out from the wreckage. As revealed by director Jon Watts, this sequence was lifted directly out of The Amazing Spider-Man #33. “Issue 33. That’s like especially [memorable] if you’re an old school Spider-Man fan,” Watts said in an interview with Fandango. “That’s one of the best, most iconic images ever – one of the best Steve Ditko illustrations. That’s Spider-Man. To be able to recreate that in this movie was an honor.”

  3. Yondu’s Death – Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2

This is arguably the best moment of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, but that doesn’t mean it’s the happiest – quite the opposite, in fact. Still, despite Yondu’s death being one of the most heart-wrenching moments of the film, it’s what comes immediately before and shortly after this tragic scene that put it at the top of this list. For all his faults, Yondu was very much the only real father figure Peter ever had in his life. Seeing him make the ultimate sacrifice to save his surrogate son from the collapsing living planet by fitting him with the only available spacesuit is a tear-jerking moment, made all the more profound by Yondu’s final words: “He may have been your father, boy, but he ain’t your daddy.” Despite the strength with which this sequence pulls at your heartstrings, though, your spirits are soon lifted when word of Yondu’s heroic deed reaches Stakar and the rest of the Ravagers. Upon learning of what the exiled space pirate has done, his former allies quickly arrive on the scene to give their fallen comrade a traditional Ravager funeral, with a stunning display of fireworks that light up the cosmos in honor of the late Yondu Udonta.

  4. Superman Vs. The Flash – Justice League

Superman and Flash have been racing one another in the comics for decades, so it’s only fitting that the latest chapter of the DCEU come to a close with a callback to this often revisited storyline. After being alluded to in Justice League’s final battle, we get a mid-credits scene in which we see Superman and Flash preparing to determine who’s really the fastest hero alive. The banter between Barry and Clark is lighthearted and amusing, and while the scene stops short of showing us who the victor is, it’s still an incredibly fun Easter egg for longtime comic book fans.

  5. The Green Goliath Vs. The God Of Thunder – Thor: Ragnarok

You’d think that the entire movie being marketed around this one scene might lessen its impact, but nevertheless, it manages to not just meet, but exceed expectations. Thor and Hulk’s superhero slugfest delivers some of Thor: Ragnarok’s best action sequences, from Thor getting the upper hand on Hulk with the Green Goliath’s hammer to Hulk scoring a cheap shot by playing possum during Thor’s “lullaby.” The humor is spot-on, too, such as Loki’s elation when Hulk ragdolls Thor much like he did to him in The Avengers. All in all, it makes perfect sense that this fight was chosen as the focal point of Thor: Ragnarok, as it fully encapsulates the film’s bombastic, over-the-top tone.

  6. Enter Batman – Justice League

The last time fans saw Ben Affleck’s take on the Caped Crusader was in 2016’s Suicide Squad, and while we only got a taste of Batman’s post-BvS brand of justice in that film, Justice League wastes little time reminding us what makes Batfleck so great. We begin with a thug stepping onto a rooftop while leaving the scene of his latest heist, and we soon catch a glimpse of the Dark Knight’s reflection in a window. Realizing he’s not alone, the criminal rightfully begins to panic as Batman swings in, making quick work of his prey and using his fear to lure out a parademon he’s been tracking. Everything about this scene is pure, unadulterated Batman, from the gadgets to the acrobatics to the intimidation factor, and his handling of the parademon is practically ripped straight from the page of Geoff Johns and Jim Lee’s Justice League: Origin (arguably the best arc of the New 52 Justice League outside of Darkseid War).

  7. Battle On The Beaches Of Themyscira – Wonder Woman

As the German’s storm the shores of Themyscira, we see how the lifelong warrior mentality of the Amazons more than makes up for their primitive weapons, as they manage to fend off the invaders with minimal casualties. The fight choreography is absolutely stunning, and the ferocity, agility, and strength displayed by every one of the women in this scene is phenomenal – more than enough to lend credence to their spears and arrows taking down a barrage of bullets. Plus, it’s all capped off by the beautifully tragic death of Antiope, which adds even more profound emotional weight to the scene.

  8. The Hotel Room Slayings -- Logan

While on the run from the Reavers, Logan, Laura, and Charles decide to take respite in a hotel room at an Oklahoma City casino. Unfortunately, the villainous enforcers are soon able to track the trio down, and to make matters worse, when Logan discovers the Reavers have found them, Professor X suffers another one of his destructive seizures. As Logan slowly claws his way back to the hotel room where he left Laura and Charles, he sees several of the Reavers, frozen in a state of temporary paralysis just as they were storming the room. Still fighting through the effects of Charles’ seizure, himself, Logan lays waste to the Reavers in an excruciatingly slow, brutal fashion, and is eventually able to give Professor X an injection to alleviate the effects of his telepathy. It’s an incredibly unique scene that certainly stands out as one of the shining moments of the film.

  9. The Death Of Wolverine -- Logan

Much like Patrick Stewart’s Professor X, it shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone coming into this film that Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine dies at the end of Logan. Once again, though, it’s hard to prepare yourself for the moment the character Jackman has played for the better part of two decades finally breathes his last breath. After the Reavers are taken out, Logan, Laura, and the rest of the young mutants still have X-24 to deal with, even after literally dropping a truck on him. Logan uses his brute strength to push the clone to his limits but is eventually impaled by the limb of a downed tree. Fortunately, Laura had taken the adamantium bullet from her father earlier on, and she uses it to blast a massive hole through the head of X-24.However, the wounds prove to be too much for Logan, whose healing factor was all but gone at this point, and he sadly dies at his daughter’s side. What makes this even more devastating is hearing Laura call Logan “daddy” for the first and last time. Still, it’s a fitting ending for Wolverine, who truly goes out like a hero in his final outing, and the cross being turned into an “X” on Logan’s grave is nothing if not tear-jerking.

  10. No Man's Land – Wonder Woman

Not single action scene from any of 2017’s comic book movies can hold a candle to the sequence that takes place from the moment in Wonder Woman where Diana climbs out from the trench in No Man’s Land to the moment she emerges from the rubble after taking out the sniper in the village. When Diana disrobes, we get to see her in full costume for the first time in the film, as she then proceeds to throw caution to the wind and use her shield to block a bombardment of German machine gun fire. Once the initial bullets stop flying, we see Diana switch from defense to offense, with picturesque fight choreography, outstanding visual effects, and of course, the Tina Guo cello riff that we first heard in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. In fact, this very well may be the best action sequence in any superhero movie in recent memory, and it’s made all the more satisfying with the conclusion that sees Diana, Steve, Sameer, Charlie, and Chief pose for the photograph that, coincidentally, also first appeared in BvS (maybe that film deserves a bit more credit than it gets).
