Zendaya's Character in Spider-Man Homecoming May Have Been Revealed

Zendaya's character in Spider-Man: Homecoming seems to be Peter Parker's long-time love interest Mary-Jane Watson, The Wrap reports. The is not a 100% for sure thing, but The Wrap cites sources "close to the project". They also assert that a recent draft of the script drops "several hints" to Zendaya being MJ.

It has yet to be announced if Zendaya will be playing the romantic lead of the movie, but if she is indeed MJ, that's likely her role. Sony has declined to comment and representatives from Marvel have not responded so far.

Zendaya is known for being a Disney Channel star. She's been in Shake it Up! and K.C. Undercover. When she was cast, her role was said to be named "Michelle", but it's common to use codenames in casting calls. Even if she is Michelle, that doesn't preclude her being a romantic lead, since Peter once dated a woman calle Michelle Gonzales in the comics.

Spider-Man Homecoming will star Tom Holland and feature a high school age Peter Parker. It's coming to theatres July 7, 2017.

Mary-Jane has traditionally been depicted as a white redhead, but the director Jon Watts has already stated that he feels reflecting New York's diversity in this movie is important. So it's not out of the question a woman of color could be in MJ's role. It would certainly seperate this movie from earlier Spider-Man films.

I'm excited to see if Zendaya will be truly playing MJ. What do you think of the potential casting?
