Wonder Woman Costumes Had This Cool Feature

Wonder Woman has done a lot of good for the DCEU movie franchise. For starters, it has become one of the most top-billing titles in recent memory. It has also given female directors a chance to prove that they can create a smart, stable, and amazing job in showing that a female superhero can do wonders onscreen.

However, this epic-ness seems to have started much smaller and can be felt in the finer points of the movie. This is what costume designer Amanda Weaver has noted in a series of tweets pertaining to the movie's costume, particularly for its Amazonian race in Themyscira.

According to Weaver, the detail that traced back to the armors and folklore of Amazons was incorporated somehow into their overall design. Their warrior armors were actually that—armors, and not the kind that had been "fetishized" for the Wonder Woman costume in older depictions in live-action.

In a long Twitter thread post, she stated that a side effect of her job as a costume designer is to reverse-engineer costumes in period or fantasy films that she watches. As such, this happened with Wonder Woman.

"When you're doing fantasy, a good designer uses something real as a starting point. In the case of WW, that starting point is EVERYTHING."

She proceeds to compare what Linda Carter's Wonder Woman costume's sources was (sexy underwear of the time period) to Gal Gadot's version, which she stated was what brought her to tears. According to her, Wonder Woman costume designer Lindy Hemming started off with actual armor as her starting point of reality basis for the fantasy, specifically, Roman armor:

Weaver added that the costumes were based on research, as can be seen in how Roman armor that was made of crocodile hide can be seen clearly on Queen Hippolyta.

The kicker, it seems, is when you look closely at the armors of the Amazons, which had a metal breastplate on the left side of the chest. This may be a nod to how Amazon folklore dictated that they cut off their left breast to better draw a bow in battle.

As much as Wonder Woman still has its downs as a movie, this amount of detail does reflect a good deal of work on the set. I actually appreciate the inclusion of the Amazons in the movie, and would love to see them fight off against the dark forces of Darkseid in Justice League.

Now, if only we can be assured that DC Comics' movies will go up from here, I'll be as happy as Weaver fangirling, with my focus being on a better narrative and storyline from here on.

Wonder Woman is still killing it in theaters.
