Wonder Woman 2: Patty Jenkins Hopes To Set Good Example After Recent Contract Renewal

Just like the character she directed, Patty Jenkins is set on making history and inspiring others. After the first Wonder Woman became a massive success with fans and critics alike, Jenkins will be returning as the director for Wonder Woman 2 now that contract negotiations have been fulfilled. She will be doing so at a reported $7 million to $9 million which is a record for a female director.

During an interview with Variety, Jenkins is hoping that the success of her negotiations will lead to other female directors getting paid as much as male ones in the future. "I was extremely aware that I had to make sure I was being paid what the male equivalent would be," she stated. The fact that her payment is a record shows that the wage gap in Hollywood is very real.

Variety pointed out that franchise directors like Catherine Hardwicke (Twilight) and Sam Taylor-Johnson (Fifty Shades of Grey) were replaced by male directors after negotiations fell through. It's why many weren't sure if Jenkins would be returning for Wonder Woman 2, but she stuck to her figurative guns and was able to negotiate for higher pay.

Wonder Woman herself Gal Gadot praised Jenkins for fighting the system and getting more money. "I think it was very important that she fought to get the best deal. You got to walk the walk and talk the talk," said Gadot. The star of the film was actually part of some minor pay controversy when it was revealed that she only got paid $300,000 for her performance. Counter reports analysis stated that this didn't include movie earnings and that male stars like Chris Hemsworth and Henry Cavill got paid similarly for their starting roles as Thor and Superman respectively.

Wonder Woman 2 is slated for release on December 13, 2019. Gal Gadot will return as Wonder Woman in next month's Justice League.
