Why Donnie Yen Chose to Join Rogue One: A Star Wars Story

When it was revealed that Ip Man star Donnie is set to star in this year's Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, it came as somewhat of a surprise since the 52-year-old actor is best known for his martial arts/drama roles. Well, Yen is explaining in a recent interview what made him venture into the world of the fantasy space saga that is Star Wars with his role in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.

Yen sat down with JayneStars (h/t Attack of the Fanboy) recently and the actor was asked what led him to jump from martial arts to fantasy. Apparently, while his previous movie roles had been about his passion, he took up Rogue One because of his kids. He said:

It was never really about the money. I picked up those jobs because they were a rare opportunity. I did Rogue One because my kids are huge fans of Star Wars.

However, it's ironic how the actor won't be able to see his kids on Father's Day because of the movie that he committed to for them:

I can't. My wife and I will be flying to Japan in two days for a project. After that, I'll be flying all over the place for some more work. I'm going to have to go back to London soon too, to do some additional photography for Rogue One.

Well, fans will sure get enough of the actor with the movie nearing its release. It's expected that the Rogue One marketing team will soon be pumping up the hype, especially since Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy and Rogue One director Gareth Edwards are appearing for a panel at Star Wars Celebration Europe in July.

I'm sure Yen's kids are excited to see their father in Rogue One though, so not seeing him in this year's Father's Day to film the movie will be worth it. His first appearance on the Rogue One trailer was definitely bad-ass!

Yen's character in the movie is currently unknown, but there have been reports that his character will be pivotal to the movie.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story hits theaters on December 16.
