The content of Deadpool may be extremely sensitive and inappropriate for young audiences, but you wouldn't expect someone to actually face legal problems after being associated with it. After all, it's the reason why the blockbuster hit received an R-rating. However, a movie theater in Salt Lake City, Utah named Brewvies has found itself in a legal predicament after releasing Deadpool.
Apparently, it's a grave offense in the Northern state to watch an R-rated film while drinking alcohol.
According to Fox 13, two officers from the Utah Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control did undercover work and watched Deadpool in Brewvies. They found that the broke DABC's laws against showing sexual content while serving alcohol on February 23. As a result, Brewvies has to attend an administrative hearing.
If the hearing doesn't end in favor of the theater, the theater will be suspended for at least 10 days or even permanently. There's also a fine to be paid "ranging from $1,000 to $25,000."
It begs the question though of whether the law involves watching sex acts and nudity in the presence of alcohol during live performances or via a pre-recorded medium.
It's a strange situation since I'm not sure booze-loving folks would want to watch a PG-13 film in theaters that allow alcohol.
If certain areas in the U.S. can't serve alcohol while featuring the adventures of Wade Wilson, not only will it be harmful to the franchise, but it could stunt the growth of a business venture that tries to make theatrical experiences better.
Fortunately, Deadpool fans around the world, most especially the people of Utah, can still watch the movie with a beer in hand in the comforts of their own homes once the Deadpool hits Blu-ray or DVD on May 10.
