Who is Richard E. Grant Playing in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker?

Vanity Fair has just released a whole new batch of photos for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, and we have our first look at Richard E. Grant in costume. As speculated by everyone, he's playing a First Order officer, and VF has finally given us a name,

As it turns out, Grant is playing one Allegiant General Pryde, but nothing else has been revealed about his character in the film besides that he'll be working with General Hux.

My guess is that Pryde will be some kind of Tywin Lannister character in the film; he'll be serving under Supreme Leader Ren, but his years of experience working in the military will keep Ren's worst impulses at bay. If we look closely Kylo is not really leadership material, and he's going to need his subordinates more than ever if he's going to run his own Empire efficiently.

Funnily enough, some people (including myself) thought that Grant was possibly taking on the role of an older Ben Kenobi. The mock-ups actually looked pretty great, and Grant has shown some enthusiasm when his character name was revealed to him. I guess the title of "Pryde" has its own kind of prestige to it. We'll just have to wait and see how the film turns out.

For now, everyone is waiting on a new trailer which will hopefully drop this July at SDCC 2019. With Avengers: Endgame out of the way, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is now easily one of the most anticipated films of the year.

Catch Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker in theaters Dec. 20.
