While Disney revealed the official release date of Star Wars: Episode IX yesterday, the studio kept mum on its Star Wars film plans for the year after the saga's sequel trilogy comes to an end. With the saga coming to a short rest, many have been wondering whether Lucasfilm would fill in the 2020 slate with a spin-off film – after all, Disney CEO Bob Iger did say the studio's already started planning on a decade and a half's worth of Star Wars movies.

Speaking with the Hollywood Reporter, box-office analyst Paul Dergarabedian weighs in on the odds of another Star Wars movie in 2020.

"They will want to keep the momentum going," Dergarabedian predicts.

The professional analyst also commented on Disney's decision in having Star Wars: Episode IX release on May 2019.

"This change will take the franchise back to its spiritual roots as a summertime moviegoing event. In addition, the dynamics of the release calendar tomorrow may be drastically different than today and may also include tangential strategies for the international rollout of the films as well," Dergarabedian explained. "Bottom line: If Disney is making these changes it must be part of a well thought out and strategically savvy business plan. One need only look at their recent track record to know that it would be unwise to second guess these bold moves."

Lucasfilm has been releasing at least one Star Wars movie ever since The Force Awakens premiered in 2015 and it's hard to believe that the studio would be making any future changes even after the end of the Star Wars sequel trilogy. With Kathlyn Kennedy teasing the announcement of a Star Wars spinoff title this summer, it's very likely that the studio is preparing another standalone for 2020. The only question left is for whom – will the standoff feature Boba Fett, or would it drop the bounty hunter in favor for Obi-Wan Kenobi?

Until the spinoff announcement, all eyes are on the first official trailer for Star Wars: The Last Jedi which premieres on Dec. 15, 2017.
