Watchmen’s Politically Charged First Trailer Teases Dr. Manhattan’s Return

HBO's definitely showing off a lot at this year's San Diego Comic-Con International.

The premium cable service just dropped the very first full trailer for Damon Lindelof's highly anticipated live-action adaptation of Watchmen, and the footage is epic. While Lindelof has long since made it clear that his upcoming series won't be a shot-for-shot adaptation of Alan Moore's graphic novel like Zack Snyder's Watchmen movie, we were never really sure how much of the series would be tied to the comics.

Now, the new trailer for Watchmen shows us a world that comes ten years after the original graphic novel. Fans were a bit worried about how the series would turn out knowing that it wouldn't be a direct adaptation of the books, but Lindelof certainly seems to have a good hold on the project.

The series seems like a pretty intelligent and modern adaptation – one that deals with modern-day issues like racism, heroism, and police violence. Not only that, but we also get to see the trailer tease the return of fan-favorite Watchmen character, Doctor Manhattan.

"Doctor Manhattan lives on fucking Mars," a character tells a police officer. Could we really get to see the all-blue nuclear physicist in the series? We'll have to wait and see. Hopefully, we'll get to see the extent of how Dr. Manhattan continues to influence modern-day society – Rorschack's influence is evident in the trailer.

Watchmen will feature Jeremy Irons, Don Johnson, Tim Blake Nelson, and Jean Smart. The series is set to air on HBO sometime this October.
