Watchmen: Identity of 'Lube Man' Possibly Confirmed

There are a lot of "WTF" moments in HBO's Watchmen, and one of them is the sudden appearance of "Lube Man" who was chased down by Sister Night in the fourth episode. While he doesn't appear again for the rest of the season, the last Peteypedia entry somehow reveals who Lube Man actually was.

As it turns out, Lube Man is possible Agent Petey—the same Petey who had been updating Peteypedia with all these expansions to the lore. As it turns out, Petey had been fired after the events of the finale, but he had ended up disappearing. Petey had apparently left multiple items behind including copies of Rorschach's Journal as well as "a jug of what appears to be some kind of canola oil."

Though I would have loved an onscreen reveal, I guess this was the best way to handle it. After all, Laurie Blake does end up by herself for the most part of the show, and it would have been hard to write Petey back into the show, considering how tight-knit the narrative was.

For now, it looks like showrunner Damon Lindelof is going to rest on his laurels for a while, now that the first season is over. I'm sure a lot of fans agree with me in thinking that Watchmen actually works best as a limited series, seeing that the story is so tightly wound to the original comic. We don't know how it will manage to stand in further seasons, especially knowing that a lot of the arcs have pretty much closed.

I guess all we can really do is wait. For now, you can catch Watchmen on HBO.
