Wall Street Analyst Says Gamers Are “Overreacting” To EA's Star Wars Battlefront II Controversy

There might have been a lot of excitement building over Star Wars Battlefront II, but the backlash against EA DICE's monetization schemes has negatively impacted the game with early sales figures in the UK coming up to a 61% drop from the sales the publisher enjoyed when it launched Star Wars Battlefront back in 2015. The publisher's shares have also declined.

While Star Wars gamers are probably snickering over EA's demise, CNBC reports that Wall Street firm analyst Evan Wingren says that the community has been "overreacting" to the publisher's pay-to-win scheme.

"Gamers aren't overcharged, they're undercharged (and we're gamers). … This saga has been a perfect storm for overreaction as it involves EA, Star Wars, Reddit, and certain purist gaming journalists/outlets who dislike MTX," the Capital Markets KeyBanc analyst says.

According to the Wingren, Star Wars gamers are actually getting it off cheap with Battlefront II, explaining that even with an additional $20 spent on mico-transaction boxes, players would only spend around 40 cents per hour of entertainment if they played around 2.5 hours a day for a year.

"If you take a step back and look at the data, an hour of video game content is still one of the cheapest forms of entertainment," he wrote. "Quantitative analysis shows that video game publishers are actually charging gamers at a relatively inexpensive rate, and should probably raise prices."

We wonder what gamers are going to say in response to Wingren's note given that the outrage over EA DICE is still simmering, only slightly appeased by the company's decision to temporarily put an end to its monetization in Star Wars Battlefront II.

Star Wars Battlefront II is currently available on PS4, Xbox One, and PC.
