Venom Will Use Motion-Capture CGI

Venom is definitely one of the more interesting comic book movies coming out next year when you consider the fact that it's not connected to Spider-Man: Homecoming. Sony has been trying to make this work by getting Tom Hardy to portray the anti-hero and possibly adapting the Lethal Protector storyline. Now, interesting details about how the character will be brought to life with motion-capture CGI were revealed by Andy Serkis of all people.

Serkis is not in the Venom movie, but he is in Black Panther, which will also use the same technology for the character's outfit. During an interview with Yahoo, Serkis slipped up a bit by mentioning how Tom Hardy will be using similar effects to bring the symbiote anti-hero to the big screen.

"Acting is acting, and the more actors – like Steve Zahn… and Karin Konoval who plays Maurice in ‘War For The Planet of the Apes' – the more A-list actors that come on board, like Mark Rylance playing The BFG, or a lot of actors in the new Marvel films… Tom Hardy is playing a new character using performance capture."

Andy Serkis is no stranger to motion-capture CGI since he portrayed Gollum in the Lord of the Rings trilogy and Cesar in the recent Planet of the Apes trilogy. He's proven that strong acting mixed with CGI is a recipe for success, and it's a shame that the actor didn't win an Academy Award for his portrayal of Gollum. We will be seeing him in live-action for Black Panther, which is a nice change of pace for the star.

Having these types of special effects for Venom should be great since the character is one of the most expressive in all of comic history. Fans can only hope that the symbiote anti-hero looks as cool in the film as in the comics, and we don't get another Spider-Man 3 situation.

Venom will hit theaters on October 5, 2018.
