Unused Avengers: Endgame Subplot Reveals Black Widow's Other Job

Avengers: Endgame featured a five-year time jump, and in that time we see that Black Widow is still trying to keep the peace in her own way by keeping tabs on the Avengers. As it turns out, there was an unused subplot that would have emphasized on Widow's search for a ‘family' in the movie.

Talking to Slate, co-director Anthony Russo reveals that Natasha Romanoff would have also lead an organization trying to help children who were orphaned by the snap. He explains:

"One thing that we talked about a lot—and I thought was really profound, but it was almost too large of an idea for us to wrangle, but we did try for a while—is just the idea that one-quarter of all children have no parents. Assuming you started with two parents. So that's a lot of global orphans. Just the staggering number of that. I believe at one point really early in development, Black Widow was actually leading the organization in D.C. that was in charge of orphans, basically. That was what she was heading up five years later. But yes, it's fascinating when you start running it down."

With the movie already juggling several plots, I can understand why they had to cut this element from Widow's story. Natasha's talk with Hawkeye about family pretty much makes sense already, and when she dies it's not any less emotional. I guess keeping her orphan subplot would have helped flesh out the post-snap world more, plus it gives a whole new meaning when Widow talks about finding her ‘family'—like she was an orphan herself.

Black Widow is set to have her own film next year though, and a lot of people guess that it's going to be a origin movie with Scarlett Johansson in the spotlight. Personally, I was hoping they set it in more contemporary times and just find a way to get Widow back. Maybe it could even be about someone taking on her mantle.

I just don't get why every superheroine solo movie has to be a period piece.

No official release date has been set for Black Widow, but you can catch Natasha Romanoff in Avengers: Endgame which is now out in theaters.
