Tomb Raider Reboot: Lara Croft Will Be A Rookie Adventurer In The Film

Just like the video games, the Tomb Raider movie franchise is also getting a reboot, and Alicia Vikander will be taking the place of Angelina Jolie as Lara Croft. With Jolie's Croft being introduced as an experienced adventurer in her first movie, Vikander reveals that her version of the character will be adventuring in this movie for the first time.

In an interview with EW, Vikander explains:

"She has all the fierce, tough, curious, intelligent traits, but we've stripped away all of her experience. She hasn't gone on an adventure just yet. She thought he was a stuck up businessperson living in the modern youth culture of suburban London, but then this whole box of information. This is the beginning."

An origin story would be right since the rebooted Tomb Raider game also showed Lara's origin, and seeing as this movie will be based on the 2013 game, it seems like the logical decision to go in this direction as well.

I'm just thinking that this movie won't be able to portray Lara's origin like in the game, so this one is going to be another separate story on its own. I don't think there's pleasing everybody at this point—people will complain if it strays too far from the game, and they'll also complain if nothing new is brought to the table.

Seeing how video game movies usually go, I'm not too eager to see this one come to life. It didn't work for Warcraft, and it really didn't work for Assassin's Creed. I think the problem is video games give us a lot of time to empathize with characters over several hours of gameplay. A movie adaptation has to cram all that in 2 hours.

Tomb Raider is set to come out March 16, 2018.
