Tom Holland Comments On The Venom Spin-off

Just recently we got news that Sony is developing their Venom standalone movie outside of the MCU, planning to start their own Marvel Universe. Seeing that Spider-Man is such an integral character to Venom, Variety has asked the new Peter Parker, Tom Holland, to comment on the whole thing.

During CinemaCon, Holland was asked what he thought about the Venom movie, to which he replied:

"I have no idea. I haven't read a script. I haven't seen any sort of concept art, so that would be something I would decide on when I see material."

Seeing that Spider-Man: Homecoming is building up so much hype because it exists in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it's a very odd decision for Sony to decide to stray away from the path again. There's even a perfect time to introduce the Venom symbiote, what with the Avengers going to space in Infinity War.

Some guess that Sony is just incredibly happy with what they have with the Venom script, and we should be expecting the film to be a Horror/Sci-Fi movie that's Rated R as well. Then again, I'm just waiting for Sony to clarify that this Venom spin-off exists in the MCU, just in its own dark little corner.

I also did some digging on the specifics for the Marvel/Sony deal, and Variety sums it up like this:

Marvel Studios won't pay Sony Pictures for the rights to put Spider-Man in Captain America: Civil War, the Avengers franchise or its other superhero films, as part of its new partnership with the studio, according to sources with knowledge of the deal. At the same time, Marvel won't receive a cut of the box office for any of Sony's films that feature Spider-Man. Sony won't receive a percentage of the revenue Disney makes from Marvel's films that have Spider-Man, either.

I'm not seeing anything that requires Sony to keep the Spider-verse in the MCU, but I thought that it would've just needed common sense for them to share the universe.

Let's just see how this pans out over time.

Venom is set for a release on Oct. 5, 2018.
