The Walking Dead's Rick May Have Given the Subtlest Bombs in the Show

The latest episode of The Walking Dead may not have been the best thing. Negan did a lot--too much--talking. The badasses just stood around twitching or glaring at the new dictator. Surprisingly, the forgettable characters stood out in their own way. And we were thrown in for another loop of a longer episode where nothing truly happens.

Except perhaps in that small part where Rick admits that the little bundle of joy that they've been tagging along was, not in fact, his. Sharing the reveal with Entertainment Weekly, actor Andrew Lincoln gave a glimpse of exactly what he thought was happening in that scene.

Apparently, more than thoughts about Judith his revelation to Michonne seems to speak volumes more about how he understood his current position. If we were to think about Rick after the four episodes it's that he's a broken man who has succumbed completely to Negan.

While there were some key scenes in the latest episode, such as that signature Rick side-glance at Father Gabriel, or his clutching the bat, tempted to swing it at Negan, we know nothing really happens. But apparently, his reveal with Judith may shed some light into that.

"It's a very important moment in understanding his psyche and going, 'This is what I've been doing for the last two years. I've accepted the situation and I will accept the situation if it's going to save lives and if it's going to protect the people I love.' It's another perfect kind of quiet heroism. You know, he's a stepdad and it doesn't stop him loving his child, but he kind of has accepted that it's not his.
The reveal, according to Lincoln, was one of the little moments that make The Walking Dead more than just a keep-on-running show from zombies and Negan. Lincoln feels like this is quite the big "sideswipe" that actually means a lot in the development of understanding what Rick has been going through.

I guess instead of a sad and broken Rick, we can now see him in a better, although slightly sadder light--a man who has to accept what happens in circumstances. And now, if Negan proves to be the bratty tyrant that he was, Rick may have to take on a little more for this season.

The Walking Dead airs Sundays, 9:00 p.m. on AMC.
