The Walking Dead Sees A Broken Daryl & A Raging Maggie

The latest episode of The Walking Dead has shown just how true the showrunners were in saying that Daryl was going to be in a bad place following the events of the premiere episode.

And we see that that's not the end of it at all. Speaking toEntertainment Weekly, Executive Producer Greg Nicotero revealed that evenDaryl's toughness will still show some brokenness.

"Yeah, I don't think there's any way around that. there's that shot in the episode of Daryl looking at him in utter and complete shock and anguish on his face, and we know who Daryl is. Daryl is the guy that would take a bullet for anybody."

And if the newest episode is any clue of just where Daryl's position in the whole thing is, it's about standing firm amid the darkness that he was ready to accept with Glenn's death.

On the flip side, however, Nicotero revealed that not everyone became submissive or destructive following the event. Even though Maggie is probably the one feeling the most anguish, she also proved to be the strongest among the survivors and possibly among the Alexandrians to date.

Nicotero revealed that instead of just becoming another pawn for Negan, she may have been the only one to keep her senses and that sense of a fighter that they had honed for the last few seasons.

"I think Maggie is falling into that, ‘Well of course I'm going to fight. That's what we do. We always fight. You got to go back to Alexandria and you got to get ready because we're going to fight,' and she's just unaffected by what Negan did to Rick, but Rick is affected. That was directed at him."

Perhaps the most interesting dynamic among the survivors so far is this. Maggie is now the push forward, while Rick is the pull back. If before, Maggie had stood as a rational and arguably diplomatic in the group, with Rick taking the reins as Ricktator, the tables may just have turned.

How exactly that mechanic will play in with Negan's visit to Alexandria in next week's episode, only time will tell.

The Walking Dead will be back next Sunday for a longer episode on AMC.
