'The Martian' Author Andy Weir Wrote A 'Ready Player One' Fan Fiction, and It's Now Canon

Ready Player One and The Martian are two of the best and most popular science fiction novels released in the past few years. The Martian was turned into a major motion picture, directed by Ridley Scott, and the upcoming Ready Player One movie is being directed by Steven Spielberg. But the author of The Martian, Andy Weir, just leveled-up their connection.

Last week on Weir's Facebook page, he explained that he read Ernie Cline's Ready Player One a few years ago and enjoyed it so much that it inspired him to write a short story set in the world of the novel, and share it to his own website. But it was just fan fiction.

Cline read his story, and just made it an addendum in a brand new paperback edition of Ready Player One. He then toldWeir that his story, titled "Lacero," was now canon in the world of Ready Player One.

Ready Player One will be released in theaters on March 30, 2018.
