The Hulk Was Cut From The Captain America: Civil War Post-Credits Scene

Mark Ruffalo's The Hulk almost made it in Captain America: Civil War.

Throughout the filming of Civil War, there were rumors that The Hulk would appear in the film. Ruffalo was reportedly spotted in Germany with the cast, and Robert Downey Jr. teased his involvement. Anthony Mackie also made it sound like The Hulk would show up in the film.

Speaking to the Huffingtonpost, Captain America: Civil War screenwriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely clarified Hulk's long-rumored role in the film, and Markus said that neither the gamma-radiated hero or his human counterpart show up in the final film:

Mark Ruffalo shot no scenes. We talked about having Bruce Banner at the very end of the film, and it just, again, seemed like we're sticking people in just to stick them in. He has clearly gone somewhere at the end of
Ultron
, and that's a story. Don't blow it off and put it in a little tiny chunk just to put in a little extra filigree on our movie. That's a story.

McFeely said that at one point Bruce Banner shows up in the film's post-credits —and also addressed the repeated rumors that Ruffalo had been sighted in Berlin with other cast members during filming:

There was a draft with a stinger of him in it. But that was long ago, and reports of him actually filming stuff — the unit publicist on the movies [John M. Pisani] looks a lot like Ruffalo, so when people say, ‘Hey, he's in Berlin dancing with Anthony Mackie,' it's John Pisani. It's not Ruffalo.

Perhaps Marvel saved his appearance for a surprise not shown to press. After all, Ruffalo previously said that The Hulk is being saved for something big.

The Hulk will appear in Thor: Ragnarok, which is set to release in theaters on Nov. 3, 2017.
