The Batman Director Compares His Film to Jekyll and Hyde

Matt Reeves' The Batman is one of the more interesting DC films currently made. While the talent of Reeves is a reason behind catching people's attention, others are keeping an eye on it because of Ben Affleck's on-again-off-again status for the character. Either way, this film will get plenty of attention when it eventually comes out, even though it currently has no release date.

Despite all of the drama surrounding Affleck's status, Reeves seems to have been working hard on the script of this movie. In an interview with Indiewire, Reeves revealed that his movie will be tackling the whole "is Bruce Wayne the mask?" debate that fans have been having for quite some time.

So Reeves comparing his film to Jekyll and Hyde is very good to hear. Bruce often struggles with his identity and it would be fascinating seeing this tackled in a movie. None of the other films have tackled this; even the acclaimed Nolan trilogy. It's always interesting seeing this subject in Batman stories, especially when there are unique twists added to them.

"I think that it's interesting, because one of the things that I've found interesting, just as we're working on the story, is looking back at Jekyll and Hyde, and the idea of your shadow-self, and the idea of, we are all multiple things. It's different aspects of who we are, and I think there are times when maybe the surface of Bruce is not really who he is, but that's his disguise. There are times when Batman's the disguise, but there are times when his true essence comesout, because by being veiled, a kind of instinctual side comes out that's very pure."

For those unaware, fans often discuss if Batman is actually who Bruce is or if it's vice-versa. Many comic runs often make Bruce Wayne the "mask" that Batman wears to blend into society, while his nightly alias is actually his real identity. Even Tom King did this recently, with Bruce thinking that his old-self died after an attempted suicide and what was left is Batman.

Considering everything we've seen in the DCEU thus far, Reeves' story sounds like a breath of fresh air. It sounds dark enough to please those that actually like the DCEU (for some reason) but with actual complexity that films like Batman V Superman did not have. Granted, Shazam looks pretty good too, but there is still room for a dark superhero movie.

No release date for The Batman has been released.
