Thandie Newton Talks About Star Wars’ Growing Diversity And Getting Cast In Han Solo

Lucasfilm's Han Solo standalone is busy working on production, and though West World star Thandie Newton feels absolutely thrilled to be part of the cast, she's also frustrated that she can't say a peep about the upcoming project.

Speaking in an interview with Oprah Winfrey on Variety'sActors on Actors, Newton talks about how she had landed her role in Han Solo and how she felt about the project.

According to the actress, after 20 years of friendship without any casting calls, her casting director friend, Nina Gold, had called her about a part for Han Solo.

"I just had these ideas of what it would be, you know, and it was completely different to everything I imagined and I'm so thrilled," Newton told Winfrey.

Noting the growing value of diversity in the Star Wars franchise, Newton couldn't help just feel any happier to be part of Han Solo.

"To be part of a legacy like ‘Star Wars,' it's loved for a reason. I could have been in it for a brief little nothing, and I would have been thrilled and delighted. To be taken seriously, a women of color at 44 years old and be in a dope-a– franchise. It's when you just let go."

"We are all in this together, and we need to let go, accept, not be so afraid, fight for the truth if we know it, if we don't know it, ask questions until you do know," the English actress said in the interview.

However, while Netwon is absolutely delighted to be part of the franchise and share her different experiences on the film, she can't really spill anything about Han Solo. Like every other star in the film, Newton signed a non-disclosure form, and if she happens to bust out any spoilers, she'd certainly get in big trouble with Lucasfilm. It's pretty understandable – the studio does want to protect its future films from leaking major spoilers to the public.

Han Solo arrives in cinemas on May 25, 2017.
